friends car had the same problem mate.. it's prolly ur air flow meter
I'm having problems with my 20 valve, when the engine is cold the check engine light will come on and it will run rich, previously the engine would rev fine except for a spot where it would choke around 1000rpm, but now the engine won’t rev past 3000rpm. When the engine gets up to operating temp the engine light goes out and all is fine.
When you give the engine a big hit the engine light comes back on and without warning it’s randomly off again. This all sounds like a sensor problem but I don’t know where to start, as far as I'm aware it could be the TPS sensor, or the o2 sensor (when checking diagnostic codes at one point, it came up with a error code for the o2 sensor, then later showed an error on the "air temperature sensor", all other times running diagnostic will show "all normal" diagnostic code, even when the check engine light is on) but don't want to randomly change sensors if they aren't the problem.
With the engine light out all is fine the idle is smooth and stable, but when the light is on it will not idle well and it has a flat spot just above idle (around 1000rpm).
Today I undid all of the electrical connectors to the sensors and sprayed them with electrical cleaner and all looked clean with no corrosion.
Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be, or may have experienced the same issue before??

opinions are like a** holes.. everyone has one but thinks everybody elses stinks
Yes normally when an air flow meter drops out (i.e. ECU cant read it) the revs will be capped at 3k!
Find out for sure what the code is...
In the diag box in your engine bay, use a paper clip to join TE1 and E1 together. This will make the check engine light flash. The codes are 2 digits, count the flashes between and let us know what the codes are.
But bets are on it being your AFM.
If you can't find a new one, look for a camry one, not sure of the exact model, but it is sligtly larger and works fine and uses the same plug.

the Camry/Vienta AFM is off the v6 3vz-fe (early-mid 90's 10 series)
just picked put one on my silvertop yesterday
plugs straight in
but you will need a reducer to get it to fit on your intake pipe
unfortunately it wasnt the fix for my (different) problem, but good luck with yours
cheers
