Default How to remove 4AGE crankshaft timing pulley?

I'm trying to remove the crankshaft timing pulley off my 4age and the bastard is stuck fast. Now these are supposed to slide off or with a little persuasion right? I've tried to stick a screwdriver down here (red arrow)

and hammer it down to force the pulley off but it wont budge. Now there is a small amount of rust on the edge of the pulley and crank intersection which I think is causing it to be stuck so am trying soaking wd40 there.

    Any other tips?

    worst case: oxy
heat up the pulley and it will come off pretty easily but you will need a new seal.

    maybe:
wire brush it and soak it in penertrating oil using a plastic hammer or wood under hammer tap the pulley in all directions to lossen it up on the snout, then get 2 flat head screwdrivers and place one were the red arrow is and the other were that thumb is (between pulley and cover) and work it ever so lightly and i meen slightly and work it from there it might take a few mins it may take a few hours, take your time, wiggle away.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.

Get some WD40 and spray it, get 2 screw drivers with 90degree bends on either side and giggle, you cant pull them off with only one screw driver because it will kink sideways and jam, why are you taking it off, worst case you will brake oil pump getitng it off.

order a new one, then drill and tap thread in to the front of the stuck one and use a normal puller to get is off

All these suggestions happened to me.

Worse case, i broke the oil pump.

Worse case getting it off. Drill and tap two threads in there and use a puller to get it off.

Get a new one from toyota bout 80 dollars if i can remember correctly.

I tried as many have said, the drill/tap and puller method and the bloody thing still wouldn't come off. Angle grinder and cold chisel FTW. The amount of rust on the inside of the pulley / crank snout was quite suprising.

Go and buy yourself a 3 armed puller... They can be used for so many things (removing bearings, etc) and they're not very expensive... Go and get one from Supercrap Autos, even their ones are decent enough...

It will take you 10 seconds to remove it, and you'll wonder how you ever got by without it...

Normally yes, but in this instance it is pretty much impossible to use a 2 or 3 arm puller as the distance between the web on the oil pump and the pulley is not large enough to get the arms in.

Yes it will fit you need to find one with smaller arms. Or you can machine down the arms to fit as I have also done. Even a 2 arm puller will work. This is definatley the way to go, without destroying the pulley.

And I dare say he wants to remove it to change the front main seal.

    cheers

thanks guys for the good suggestions. I'm pulling it off so I can finish disassembling my motor for full rebuild.

I will try all methods and see what works for me. I've ordered a new pulley (about $40) as the current one has a bit of damage already so the drill & tap method wont faze me.

If you pull your motor down regularly like i do.....it is handy to have the pulley drilled and tapped from the word go, as they are a PITA to get off when they become stuck.

if the pulley is really stuck all you'll end up doing with a 2 or 3 arm puller is breaking the rear plate doobie off the pulley in chunks.

drill and tap as mentioned many times is the best way.

Hmm I also remember you pulling the whole front gear off the back plate, using the drill and tap method? Or am I mistaken? I had them pics floating around somewhere. Do you have them?

Yeh I almost resorted to drilling and taping last time, but managed to modify my 2 gear puller with uber long 90 degree arms, to fit nicely.

    cheers
