Red face New Question, 4AGTE- Commetic, TRD, etc. best head gaskets?

As above I to have a "mate" who has just re-built a 4AGTE and when I, I mean he added oil, it started to leak out between the head and block, No. 1 cyl, exhaust side.

It's difficult to tell exactly where it's coming from because there's stuff all room in there, and the fresh glossy black paint doesn't help.

If this is the case can he re-use the head gasket (Genuine Toyota) and which way should it be installed?. He thought the smaller holes in the gasket go towards the front due to the increased air flow at the front of the engine helping cool it and diverting more water to the rear of the head.

Yes my "mate" is a noob

I believe the gasket is on the wrong way. You will probably need to make 100% sure which was the gasket goes on.

Thanks for the bad news lads, I was pouring in the oil and thought I had better check there isn't a big puddle of oil under the car and what do you know. The tin of 2 stroke mower fuel was so tempting, best be getting the head back off then

no you shouldnt reuse the headgasket... but surely when "your mate" was installing it you noticed that that the holes in the gasket wouldnt line up to the holes in the block ?

ROFL, thats abit silly thing to do.

A car came into one of your service departments with a major oil leak after the blokes mate rebuilt the engine,
forgot to put the rear main seal in

no rear mail seal? I think that would be a bit of an understatement to say it had a major leak

Thanks guys, I was gona blame it on my seeing eye dog, but It's just a moment of stupidity on my part.

lesson learnt, now I'm off to get a new head gasket. Can anyone recommend a good but not overly expensive replacement that will with stand a moderate increase in boost?

    Cheers Dan

problem with trd and cometic is that they are MLS gaskets and require the surface to be pristine. if another gasket has just been put on there without removing and milling the block/head then the MLS will not nessecarity seal properly.
