    Default 3SGTE oil pump upgrade

    Hey,

I was pondering the idea of upgrading my oil pump with my 3sgte rebuild. From reading the odd thread here and there I've vaguely gathered that the 3sgte pump could be better, can anyone verify this?

If so, what are my options in upgrading the standard oil pump, can I source one from a later model toyota or are there any performance groups that offer an uprated pump for the 3sgte?

Any help is much appreciated cheers.

You can get a Gen3 oil pump pulley which is smaller and therefore pins the oil pump faster. You could also get a late model 5S oil pump which has a larger gerotor. It would also be a good idea to clean up the ports of the pump and increase release pressure a little.

Clean up the ports as in port them out a little/machining wise?
Also how do you increase the release pressure - change the oil pressure release valve spring?

Why do you advise the porting/changing release pressure josh?
With every step of my rebuild I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I know exactly how everything works, so a breif rundown on the aforementioned would be much appreciated.

I've rebuilt dozens of these and have found no need to uprate the GTE pump as it has the largest volume of all S series pumps. The 5S pumps I've checked are about 1.4mm (from memory) thinner in the rotor.
having said that, we fit a new pump to 90% of the engines we build as they are just worn out

What weight oil do you guys run terryo on your track 3sgtes?

Also; Do they have any oil pickup issues on the standard sump when taking corners hard? I'm a little worried about oil starvation when the oil moves away from the pickup pipe when taking a corner at high speeds.

    Cheers

    Shweet thnx Joshstix.

A point I forgot to include, I have no plans on raising my rev limiter so given that it will remain at the standard 7000rpm there should be no reason to replace the standard oil pump (a new OEM one) should there? Are there any durability issues with the OEM oil pump, because I plan to be at that 7000rpm red line fairly often on a track day. My new rebuild should be able to wind out to 8000rpm safely and often, but I'm keeping it at 7000rpm just so it (hopefully) lasts longer. Just need to know if the OEM pump is up for it (frequent 7k wind outs).

    Cheers

I can vouch for there being a thicker 5S pump. The thicker ones that I have seen are ones that were on balance shaft equipped 5S engines. My supposition is that there are more bearings in the engine, so greater volume required.

If you have seen a 5S pump that is not thicker, then my guess is that it came off a 5S w/o balance shafts.

If I was building a 3sgte that would have to sit in traffic jams at idle for hours on end on 40 degree C days, I would go out of my way to put a larger volume pump on it. Otherwise, I would just use whatever I have.

The oil pressure would drop pretty low on my ST165 at idle on those hot days...

It might even be better in your case not to use the higher volume pump if you are going to be living so high up in the revs...

Last thing you want is to shatter the pump with hydraulic lock on a mis-shift.

There can be an risk of pickup while cornering hard i have read. Moroso in the USA makes custom oil sumps with larger capacity and baffling. Road and Track up here in Ipswich modify the stock sump for some larger oil capacity also. I will probebly end up choosing one of these options on by build.

    Hope that helps

I second this. Definitely balance shaft models 5S.
