The trans code is on the build plate, which is rivetted to the firewall or inner guard in the engine bay.
Hi All,
I currently have an rn46 hilux with a 5 speed gearbox. Just wondering if someone could help me find out what model gearbox it would be as it replaced the 4 speed. Ie where are the numbers located etc.
Any help is much appreciated

if you had a 4 speed in there b4 and its been changed you would have to look at what car it came out of.
maybe an rn85 but it could be anything.
what extension housing is on it.

Is there anywhere on the gear box itself that might have it written. The car already had the box in it when the guy i got if from purchased it. Also, i know that they only ever had the 4 sp, 5 sp wasn't introduced till 84 model or something like that.

W50 etc. are all old school weedy-looking things that were considered a hot item in the 70's. I suppose they WERE good when compared to 'Aussie 3 speed'...Originally Posted by The Real Roadrunner
dont you mean "aussie 4 speed" ie m20,m21 etcOriginally Posted by mrshin
the one in the ute had the shifter bolt to the side of the box and some nasty linkages.
roadkill, chances are that it will be a g52 or something similar but without pics i couldnt tell you.

Pics will definately help. Has the floor been cut?
The shifter on the w50 sits further back than the 'side shift' setup on the original.

M20, 21, etc. 4 speeds were the 'luxury' boxes though, the general riff-raff had to put up with the 3 speed versions. Some folks I've known have tended to refer to them as 'the aussie three speed', and it was close to the worst imaginable common car gearbox I could think of at the time.Originally Posted by The Real Roadrunner
if theres something worse than the aussie 4 speed i had in my onetonnerboganshitute i dont want to know about it.
