    then went to this.....

got sick of killing 4a gte's at 180 - 200 rwkw so did this....

is an extremely time consuming conversion. we cut 60mm out of the firewall, used an ma70 supra tunnel and a w 58 box. now runs a pedal box and very rear mounted seating position with shifter linkage...

hardest thing was learning how to drive it, surprisingly the handling was nearly spot on as it was, weight differance is there but barely noticable. biggest handling drama first time out was the brake bias setup on the tilton pedal box, once sorted the car was majic...

Were you drifting it at indy last year or had it on display it at indy, i remember seeing it there, or maybe i was to wasted to remember anything haha, an odd conversion considering the factory balance of the ae86, but good on you for trying something different and good to see it works well.

yeh was a decision born from cost effectivness... built 4a motors are great but when you use 4 in 2 years the cost becomes prohibitive, so another form of motivation was sought...

the 1uz is strong as all hell, and in stock form makes enough power to be comparable.. not as high a rwhp figure, but well over double the torque, and back to na drivability as well..

    is a very fun combination..

Good to see you're loving it again Josh.

Would you mine sharing a bit on how it drives and handles ? Would be interesting to know. Specially with the mods to the tunnel etc to centre it as far back as possible

    well, where to start..

we actually broke the camera at the crutial finishing stage when it was all coming togeather but i guess ill start tonight and update a bit at a time....

we originally planned to drop it all in and not cut the chassis at all, after looking at some pics of , i think, sprinter trd's ,track version, we thought it would be a goer that way...

once we sat it in there, we totally decided it needed to go back a fair bit to keep some semblance of handling in there. so out came the angle grinder....

    a few texta marks....

and a lot of angle grinding....

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-20

and we ended up with a fairly sizeable hole in the car...

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-20

from here we added a steel 1.6mm box section to bring the firewall backwards 60mm...

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-20

and a tunnel trimmed and cut from a parts ma70 supra, seeing we figured a r154 clearance was big enough...

    and then..

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-20

the result was quite a lot of room under the floor....

as you can appreciate theres lots of photos and a lot of explaining to do, ill post more each night and answer any questions, but theres no way i can sit thru doing it all in one sitting sorry..

we looked at two sorts of setup for the throttles, the first was an efi products set, and this set is actually 2 sets of silvertop 20v throttles, all packaged in a kit through the guys at A1 turbos in NZ. all these guys do is 1uz conversion bits..

the efi products kit was a little flashier, but used the lower half of the factory inlet, and hence the inlet length was about 7-8 inches longer from the butterflys to the valves. we figured that being a 4 liter v8 in a sub 900 kg car already, we didnt need any more low down grunt, and the shorter inlet length is supposed to promote top end revability. we combined this with a set of custom made ( re home made) narrow diameter, short primary 4into 1 extractors, and the car susequently revs its tits off. happily sits at over 7000 rpm with just a hit of the loud pedal..

pics of all bits to follow as the build pics progress..
