Unhappy Shuddering during slow down - Fixed

The latest problem on my Cressida (MX83) that I'm having is that during decel, via general braking or engine braking, the car will begin to shudder quite violently.
I'm thinking its either torque converter or gearbox.

The shuddering still remains when I put the car into 'N', so its not to do with rev's, or engine. The shuddering will stay until the car comes to a complete stop, or I accelerate again. If I accelerate, the shuddering becomes less noticeable, but still there for abit.
I'm also getting some gearbox oil leaking from the front of the transfer case, which makes me think its the torque converter.

    Its not brake shudder either.

I'm also getting some slip when accelerating sometimes around 1100-2000rpm and after just coming over a speed bump. This could be due to the oil that I'm loosing, but I think its related.

Has anyone had the same issue, or knows what it could be?

    Thanks!
    Ben

Wouldnt havev a clue about auto gearbox's, but i had the same problem with my old celica, it was the steering rack, it was worn and sloppy causing the wheels to shudder with decel/braking etc.

    sounds like suspension/steering slop.

Get a full check done on all your front suspension and steering joints, you'll probably find that you have some worn out bushes / ball joints / tie rod ends.

I had a similar problem on my old crown - lower control arm and castor rod bushes.

Most likely the shit crimped in universal joints have worn out , you can get them replaced but only a select few do it .

Will try to sort it out tomorrow.

    Just had a check then.
Drive shaft bearing seems to be ok.
There is abit of movement/flex ~5mm or so, I assume this is normal.

I'll get the front end looked at this morning, see what they can find.

I'm also thinking the same thing with the output shaft seal, but there was less oil on the ground this morning... dunno.. Ill see how the oil situation plays out

Something like this happened to me (MA70 with W58). During decel or coasting was getting shocking vibration/noise.

Turned out to be the tail shaft. The rear section (into the diff) had collapsed back into the shaft (dunno how???), resulting in the total shaft length being approxiamtely 2 inches too short. It was enough to engage during driving but was sloping around under no load.
They call them fingers.... but i've never seen them fing!!!!

    UPDATE

Shop looked over the front end, diff, rear shafts, and drive shaft and couldn't find anything wrong. He has no idea what it could be, but suggests the gearbox.
The vibrations come and go, which caused him to think not mechanical, even though it was all checked out.
He gave me the details of a mob nearby, so I'll hassle them for abit.

I might buy some Toyota fluid and do another oil change on the box, but after that i'm stumped.

    Bloody annoying

    Engine mounts are good.
Gearbox mounts are slightly saggy, but still ok.

    Fixed.

I drained the sump and radiator, refilled with 4L of Toyota Type IV and all is dandy.
No more shuddering and smoother shifts too.

So there we go. Toyota Type IV fixes all

Any idea of what was in there before?
4L is only part of it, maybe only half - I don't know anything about what you've got, so if the previous stuff was engine or gear oil, I'd dump & fill at least one more time!!!
If it was Dexron or Ford Type fluid, it wouldn't have made that much difference.
