Default steering column for R&P conversion - RA28

    hi guys,

i have a ke70 crossmember and steering rack in my 28.

i have fitted the ke 70 steering column.

the lower part of the shaft is too short. i have belted it with a hammer and managed to lengthen it about 10mm maybe a touch more. but i need at least another 20mm i reckon.

it doesnt seem to want to move any more.i was wondering what the odds were of using a lower section out of something else - supra etc...... anyway tried this.

did others get the std one to fit? - how far dd you extend it?

can i cut and weldit? or will my engineer spew?

    Cheers

ha ha. iv been messing around with this for months, i found that if i lenghten the external housing by 40 or so millimeters the shaft will protrude into the engine bay at a good length, there is enough play in the shaft itself to compensate for this. mounting it to the body will be another problem as will securing the shaft to stop it from slipping into itself.

ke70 on top, ra23 on bottom. notice the indentation on the ke 70 column, that is what lines up with the holes on the second part of the shaft

extra length needed on ke70 column, 40-50mm

as to using other bottom section of the housing i have no idea, wreckers around my area don't have any exotic parts so that leaves me with the cut and shut option. this will depend on your engeneer i supose, as long as it looks good he may not notice it. Don't ask, Don't tell.

    cheers mike
