Default Simple Conversions 18R to 18RG

Let me start by saying I am not mechanically minded but I am willing to give most things a try. I have recently purchased an 18RG Engine to rebuild and put it into an RA23 Celica in place of the 18R engine which it currently has. I have been told that this is a simple bolt in job. Is this really true?

Will my existing gearbox be good enough

    Question 2.

Has anyone tinkered with the standard 18r engine with added modifations and what sort of power increases are we talking?

I am not really interested in a super fast car, I just want to restore the car to near mint condition while improving some of the cars short comings.

    Thanks

You have an RA23 which has an 18R-C = Providing it's manual, your existing gearbox is a W50...

18R-C to 18R-G is a bolt up conversion...

The only main thing you need to change is where the main throttle linkage sits...

If you go EFI, then all this is another story...

If ye search, ye shall find!

W50 is a strong gearbox, and there's no point changing to anything else for the 18R-G...

You could go to a W58, which would give you a much better highway gear, and a shite load of strength, but the gearbox alone (which is hard enough to find) will cost you between $500-800 and isn't as easy as just bolting it in...

and yes its a very easy bolt in job...only things u have to sort out is accelerator linkage and maybe bend the fuel lines.....but yeh very easy. A bit harder with wiring if u have an EFI version but dont think u said u do...

and piss the linkages off and go cable from the pedal to the throttle body, gives you better response, and i think i still got mine that i brought from rodger,

unless you want to search the froums for "rodger" and get him to make one up for you, cost about the 100 dollar mark,
