Default Tech: Adding Accessories to your Hilux

I don't know about you but whenever I want to add some new accessory to my Hilux I spend hours hunting for the documentation, paper diagrams, or searching the interweb for that elusive wiring chart or colour code. Whether it be an updated stereo, or a new gauge, or some other electronic gadget, it causes me no end of pain.

So I've disassembled the Hilux ignition module and made up a chart to provide a ready reference.

This is the module out of my RN85R. I don't know if other Hiluxes, or even other Toyota models of a similar vintage are similar, so check your own wiring before using this. The module is easily removed from the barrel by undoing one screw at the top back of the module. You have to take off the lower dash panel to get reasonable access to it.

The black socket is a 7 pin arrangement with one blank:

And here's the wiring chart and pin assignments for the socket:

I hope this helps anyone else attempting similar additions.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Excellent info Peter. On the note of wiring up accessories, I used the old 4 inch speaker space in the dash to mount a fused junction box that I use to power all my accessories. It supplies power for my amps, headdeck, gauges, and LED washer lights. The next time I have my dash apart I'll get photos of it.

Peter is this thread just limited to electrical accessories or all types?

A lot of people don't know that there is a cup holder available for the Gen 3 Hilux it's about $55 from Toyota and fits above the center air vents. The Gen 4 Hilux had a different holder in the same place which costs @$90.

I'm not sure on this but the 4Runner/Surf had power windows, and these would be easily fitted to a standard Hilux of the same generation? I hope this is true as it's something that I want to do in the future.

Now that is interesting. I might make a trip out to PnP as I thought there were a couple of 4Runners/Surfs out there last week.

Good work (if it's possible 1J)

Ive been thinking about this for a while.

The Surf had a full size window. (no quarter glass).
Other then that, the door is exactly the same. Not to sure how you would go getting the power windows into the original door, but it might work of you use the Surf glass.
Rear windows also have a quarter glass, but the square bit is the same size as the standard hilux.

The rear power windows should go in without a hassle, the front might be more interesting.
Ive been looking for a pair of front doors for my hilux for ages, but they dont appear around here much.

    anyway..

    Good luck!

I didn't notice that the surfs were a full glass. but it should be just a matter of trimming off the front of the windows bottom bracket or using the Hilux bracket depending where the window motor normally sits. Unfortunately I don't think I'll get to this this year. Interior will definitely be next year though.

That is what i was trying to say.. unfortunatley it appears that i didnt explain it very well...

When i eventually find some surf doors selling at a reasonable price.. that is my plan.
