    Default KE70 19 tooth spline & 21 tooth spline 5 speed

    Hi all,

Im in the process of getting my 82 model KE70 on the road. It currently has an auto box in it, but i have scrapped an 84 model not too long ago, taking from it the 5 speed box, pedal assembly, clutch, flywheel, tailshaft, clutch cable, speedo cable and starter motor just to be sure i've got the lot.

Now i have looked at the clutch plate and I decided to get a brand new one on ebay and it arrived nice and quick, but upon going to bursons this afternoon to order a thrust bearing I was asked which model, i said KE70 but he informed me that there is the 19 tooth spline box and the 21 tooth spline box. Just trying to find out if anyone else has encountered this problem and can you tell which car will have which box without pulling it out and counting teeth? I assume that both of these 5 speeds are named with different model numbers, or are they both K50's?

I'm now stuck with a rare clutch plate to suit a 21 tooth spline box, when my box is the 19 tooth variant.

i think the xx models had the 21 tooth, but i would also think that all KE70 have the 21 spline, so really i can't answer you question.

Just pull it out, it will only take 1/2 hour if you have all the tool's, and if you have the flywheel you are gonna have to pull it out anyway.

I have the gearbox sitting there at my dad's factory and he's messaged me to say it's the 19 tooth box.

Looks like I may as well get a clutch kit to suit the 19 now.

erm... input shaft from KE20 to KE70 didn't change..
perhaps the 21 spline plate you have is actually from an AE71, with a T50?

ebay is teh suck for clutch parts
list it again, and buy a proper one
an RPM clutch is a good choice

I thought T50 where only 20 or 22 spline, not 21, there is a 21 spline K50 as this is what the Starlet boys use when converting to 4A, isn't it?

Don't know if it is to suit T50, i can check tomorrow pretty easy as my AE71 is sitting in the carport with no motor

The bursons book gave two different part numbers for two different thrust bearings but each said to suit 1.3L with the part number for the 21 spline version having the word rare in brackets after it.

The reason I made this tread is to...
    A. Determine what model this so called "(Rare) 5 Speed" is in.
    B. If it is also called a K50 or different model number box alltogether.
    C. To help out others who need to get a clutch kit or parts for their own KE70 so they don't end up with parts they do not need, as I have just done.

Clutch plate slides straight onto My AE71 box.

Seems as though people refer to AE71's as KE70's by the looks of things.

    Buyer beware!

At least I know I can use the part now

Maybe the other "1.3L" - rare 5 speed is the 2A?

When people say T50 20 or 22 spline they are referring to the output shaft that goes into the driveshaft.

Here they have been taliking about the Input shaft that the clutch plate goes on.

Some Ke7* models were available with the T series box, I believe the KE74 high roof wagon ran a 4K with T40 box behind it for example. Obviously extremely rare in Oz but you see a few around in NZ where we got them as jap imports, bellhousing is pretty sought after.

You could be right, maybe it was the KE72 that ran the 4K? Either way, pretty rare in NZ and virtually non existent in Oz.
