Default Problems with 18RG Mech.Fuel Pump

    Hello Modders,

I have just broken 2 mechanical fuel pump on my 18RG in 2 days. The bit that broke is the the arm that the cam activiates when the engines is turning over thus operating the daiphram. I'll give a better description if people require.

Just wandering if this is a common occurance with 18RG's and these 30 yo fuel pumps? Should i be looking to upgrade to an electric one?

    Cheers, Pomey!

Well... Changing to an electric fuel pump is a piece of piss, and you'll probably thank yourself for it eventually. And if you leave it sitting for a week, no more cranking to wait for the thing to prime!

Have you had a look at the cam on the aux shaft? There could be a good reason for it breaking. Also, you don't need to persist with 30 yo pumps. You can buy brand new ones from Fuel Miser. $85, PN FPM-019A. But if there is something wrong with the aux shaft, I don't suppose destroying a brand new pump would be fun.

Mate, do you have the spacer in between the block and pump?? Not having that will cause you to break the pump lever. Otherwise, yeah, a new mech pump, or run an electric(make sure you have a relay on it and only run when ignition is on, and dont use a high pressure EFI pump eg VL pump etc, get a low pressure pump)

You beat me to it, that was my first guess too.

We ended up using a mechanical pump from a 1970's toyota petrol truck engine, I have no idea what engine its from off the top of my head, but we modified it to fit and it's able to supply about three times the old one. It looks just like the genuine ones only a bit bigger.

We chose this one because the cheap tin-top replacements are poorly made and the input and outlet tubes keep breaking.

Ahh spacer, what a simplistic yet fantastic idea, i think i've even got one somewhere!

Thanks for the advice guys, elec fuel pump is definitely on the cards.

    Cheers, Pomey!
