Default Small Wiring Glitch, car runs for 2min then blows fuse.

    Hi all,

got the intresting issue, that my car blew a 60 amp fuse, set off a circuit breaker and blew a 10amp fues all in one big go.

I since had the 60 amp fues which was between the battery and the alternator replaced, and reset the circuit breaker which is in line just before the fuse I am am about to describe.

I've had the battery and the alternator checked out they are re-installed and I've got the issue that I can start and run the car, it runs fine for around 2-3min then just blows a 10am fuse in the fuse box. Now I know with the new engine and what not in my car but Jeff pretty much kept it all factory. I am running a factory MX83 Cressida fuse box and circuit breaker that is installed in the left front kick panel.

I have power running from the battery, into the circuit breaker then from that into the fuse, the wires then run to the ECU and off into the engine bay

I can't quite remeber the colours but I rember 1 being ECU power (blue with red tracer) and possible fuel resistor?? (black with an orange tracer). from what my dad reads on the wiring diagrams he believes that this fuse from factory is a 15 amp, however I have been driving around with a 10amp with no worries.

Nothing has changed so just wondering if any one has any ideas or stuff to try.

turn off teh car fridge in the back hehehe

no idea dude but if its been running as long as it has with a 10amp it should be fine, try checking around the firewall where the harness runs and make sure nothing has rubbed through. sounds more like a shorting prob than anything getting spiked.

have u checked current draw, if factory was 15A - i suggest it was for a reason. Is it all well insulated - could just be touching something it shouldn't when u movin around - hope this helps Rosie.

Well now that I am in the same state as my car my dad confirmed that the wire running into the ECU is in fact power for the ecu. With a car shuffle tommorrow the old girl will end up in the garage and we'll try and follow the other wire.

Measure some loads and go digging

See if you can get your hands on a current clamp and check the current draw on the fuse as suggested by Rosie. You may find it is just over the 10A and that is why it is taking a couple of minutes for it to blow. Even if it should be a 10A fuse, using a 15A fuse wont be a problem.

sounds like short somewhere else in the car, go from back to front to find non insulated wires ( start a tail lights, the boot interaction is normally cause)

Might even be worth looking for a short where someone may have hotwired it in the past...

Well we got it sorted, after looking all through the loom between the fuse and the battery and where the wires from the fuse ran (which was to the main efi relay) we didn't come across any shorts.

Also at the same time me dad was having a look at the wiring diagrams from the 7MGTE supras. We came across that they don't run anything less than a 15 amp fuse. So we got an amp meter inline with the fuse with a 15amp installed and found that it is drawing 12amps. The car started and ran fine for 5 or so min last night so I'll put it all back together and should be problem solved.

We all cleaned up alot of the wiring for the ECU so under my dash isn't such a bitch anymore
