Default 1996 corolla - what are my drop in options?

The corolla's engine is seeming a little tired lately and if it's going to be replaced, I'd rather replace it with something better.

Probably looking more at getting a front cut to swap things over with a better engine. Don't really know what I'm talking about with the rolla's but thinking a 4A-GE blacktop or 4A-GZE would all go nicely in there?

Has anyone here done these kinds of conversions to a corolla? How difficult is it? Should it be basically strip the engine bay, drop new stuff in and drop off at autoelectrician? Any huge pains in the arse in the conversion? What doner cars should I look for?

    Thanks heaps for any help.

    Dan.

Has anyone ever heard of someone wanting to do the conversion to a 96, and not either an 80's corolla, MR2 or Sprinter? Because that's what search seems to give me.

    Thanks for your help

if you've got a 7A engine in there, the 4A whatever engine should be a bolt in..

    you've got a few choices

    4A-whatever, 7A-GE, 7A-GZE (that'll be something different)

only issue would be that the engine is older than the car, and would that be a legality issue where u're at?

What engine came in it? 4afe , 7afe? going from a 7afe to a 4age N/A you wont be that happy with the money you spend, id head towards a 4agze or 7agze

The car is a 1996 AE102 with 7A-FE at the moment. What cars did the 7A-GE and 7A-GZE come from? What kind of power do those engines make?

    Also it's a hatchback, not a sedan.

Wouldn't mind doing something different, especially if it will turn out easier for me in the long run anyway.

7age and 7agze are hybrid engines, pretty much a 4age or 4agze using the 7a's 1.8L block, its a bit of screwing around unless you are a mechanic, or have a good friend willing to do work for cheap.

You could just do a rebuild of your 7afe, get some ae112 exhaust headers for it, piggy back ecu for ignition and fuel ratios, then use some 4afe pistons in it to notch up the compression, along with some porting and cams and use a honda 54mm butterfly and bore out your Throttle body to suit. Should pull 85-90kws ATWs and get you down the QM in low to mid 15s

haha that top one is my car..

    i have a 20valve ST in my 96 101..
didnt have any problems with passing blue slip with it, the mechanic said for my model car it allowed anything 4A so the 20valve passed.
    id highly recomend the 20valve..
uses same mounts and all, its nearly a drop in conversion, i am using a c52 G box, also upgraded the brakes slotted rotors and rear disc conversion
look for my car in the members ride section
