Default The AW11 Brake Upgrade Thread

Reading the 'interchangable oddities' thread, there's something about fitting ST185 Celica brakes to an AW11. So as not to clutter that thread, does anyone have a comprehensive list of what can and can't be done, what needs to be modified, what parts you need, and how easy it is? Back brakes too if there is anything...

    Cheers, RM.

front brakes are as easy as a set of gt4 twin piston calipers bolt directly on, the only mod needed it to trim the dust shield back a little as the caliper is a bit larger

Ok, so use the standard disks (I've got RDA slotted) with the GT4 callipers? Which generation GT4, and how much should I expect to pay for them?

yeah, the standard discs are fine, they are the same size as on the celica counterparts

the st165 has the twin pot calipers, and i think the grpA st185 has the twin pot calipers, the jap st185 had the twin pots, while the aus st185 had larger discs and big singles, these are not a straight fit

maybe about $100 - $150, then you would probably need a rebuild kit on top of that

the rears are alot harder i believe people have shoehorned sw20 rears on but its a bit fiddly

imho the better upgrade for the aw11 is the single piston st185 caliper and the matching st185 disc. all that is needed is to get another hole drilled to suit the 4 x 100 pcd so you get a bigger pad and disc plus the single pots have a larger range of pads available than the twins aparantly

edit: but the twin pots are alot easier

Toof is the man to talk to. He has fitted the celica brakes and has said very good things about them.

All Aus specs and group A St185's had the large singles as far as my memory serves me

Only the JDM St185 model had the smaller twin pots , as they run a 14 inch rim standard , not 15 inch like the Aus spec or group A

The singles are actually bigger and better performing - as mentioned ( i believe a 284 mm disc on the singles )

St205 front brakes also go onto the front of aw11's - in a similar manner to which you put them on a St185 like mine - and they are awesome on mine ..

Expensive as all hell but by far the best " bolt up " upgrade you lot should look for for the serious performance cars

Do they fit under the 15s though? It's what I'm running at the moment, I don't really want to go any bigger...

yeah the larger discs do fit under 15's as thats what the gt4 has, and even the mr2 rears as sw20's have 15's

I have St185 single piston disks up front and they just fit under my 16's.

You need to drill three extra holes in the rotor to get it to fit the AW11 hub. The centre bore of the disk however is perfect. I also trimmed the edge of the dust cover as it rubs against the rotor.

For the back I am using the front AW11 rotors with a spacer in between the hub and rotor, with rear Gen3 SW20 calipers.

I haven't driven the car with the rears upgraded but the front upgrade was very worthwhile. I suspect I might need to swap over to a SW20 turbo master cylinder to make up fro the increased piston sizes in the calipers though.

is that the only mod ifications need to fit the larger gt4 dics and big singles? re drilling the rotor and trimming the dust shield, You don't need to put any spacer plates or anything on? the caliper bolts directly to the original caliper holes?

Ok, so I use GT4 twin pistons at the front (it seems like the best bang-for-buck), the AW11 front rotors at the back with SW20 rear callipers and some mods. How much modification is required to make the SW20 callipers and AW11 front disks all bolt up? And what's a good place (prefer in Perth) to source the parts?

Edit-Can I re-use the front callipers as rears, or is that not a worthwhile swap?

    Cheers guys, great thread. RM.

yes wiso the caliper will bolt straight onto the aw11 hub with no mods the caliper the caliper itself will sit further away from the hub as the "slider" ??? is different
