Default Power Steering pump what do I have?

This is a pic of my power steering pump setup, can someone tell me if this is a 1G one.

I need to replace it, not working very well at all. I got one quote and was told about $450 minimum which I think is a load of shit. That was just to resleeve it not remove and install.

What is the best way to go about getting it replaced, ie.. I pull it out and get a 2nd hand one or take it in to get it rebuilt/sleeved by someone.

Who has done this and what do you recommend I do, can they be reco'ed for $200 or so.

Also any tips for me when I pull it out.

    Thanks

Toymods rocks, definitely the best car modification site out there!

Im in no physical or mental state to be answering questions... but anyway.
That looks like a pic of the steering rack and pinion casing, dont the black lines on the right go to the pump?

Id definately go with a 2nd hand pump, 1G will be a bit rare though, will have to be off a shelf so its going to be pricy.

The pump will have a pulley wheel on it, running of the crank, probably on the drivers side of the engine. Its just a reservoir and pulley really.

Correct. That's not the power steering pump.

This is the Power Steering pump. It has the fluid reservoir on top, a pulley driven by the belt, and inlet/outlet running down to the steering rack (the black hose is non-pressurised return line; the steel line below it is high pressure feed line)

This is it from the back. Sorry it's not a real clear photo but it's the rusty coloured unit, again under the Power Steering reservoir.

What you are looking at is the power steering rack. You're in QLD so I can't recommend anyone.

What exactly is the problem you are having? Heavy steering due to lack of power steering? Too much freeplay in steering? Tell us more so we can better diagnose your symptoms.

Does your Power Steering gear (on the steering column) have a bleed nipple? If so, try bleeding the system. If there is any air in there you'll have a problem.

You bleed it like you do brakes. Place a tube over the nipple, open it, with engine running turn the steering wheel several times full lock, this will push power steering fluid through to the bottle. Get all the air bubbles out, make sure to top up fluid in the reservoir.

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    Peter

$450 is about right (and anywhere up to $1000) for a rack reco.

    Hard to diagnose without symptoms.

Over a period of time the steering has gotten stiffer and it makes a whiring noise when I turn the wheel. It would do it close to full lock but is progressively getting a little bit worse.

The steering overall now is a lot stiffer and it is making the whiring noise after about half a turn of the steering wheel.
What does that sound like? Is the noise air in the line?

The resoviour is full as I have checked it numerous times.

    Thanks

pump is dead. remove and reco is your best option, get a few diferent prices, maybe try and find a specialty steering place....yellow pages,

finding a good used 1g pump will be a prob, still cost you $100 then pay someone to fit $100.... and not getting any gaurantee...

Hey thanks, I will have a crack at doing it myself.

I will remove it and take it to someone who can reco it maybe or I will hunt for a second hand one.

Whirring noise in the pump as you turn the wheel is air in the ps line. I know because I've just been through all that. Scared the crap out of me but a bleed of the system (let the fluid flow through for a while) fixed it A1. Topping up the PS fluid in the reservoir alone will not fix it. Locate the bleed valve and do as I outlined above.

If that doesn't fix it, as IN 05 NT suggests, you require a reco.

Heavy steering is usually indicative of the pump failing; whirring is air in the line but may be a side-effect of pump failure.

I had a leaky pump on my 3sge (i know it's probably different, but...) and I found a seal kit for about $23 from a power steering shop in Adelaide. I was also losing fluid from the rack and a $50 or $60 (can't remember, long time ago) teflon seal kit fixed that up really well. I was also quoted $500 for a reco rack and nearly died. After i did it it was so easy and at one tenth of the cost.
