4WD OFFROAD Cruise!!!!!!

I picked up my truck last night from the shop,
I drove it all the way from Blacktown to Silverwater with Rod's old 5M-GE
and some other stuff from his place. So I reckon a quick "test" run is in
order this weekend. If you can make it reply or PM me.

Once I get rid of my sorry excuse of a 4WD, (the Courier not the Falcon haha), and I get a newer and better fourby, I'll come out and join you lads for some 4-wheelin'.

I'm looking to either buy an early 90's model Hilux or possibly a Troopy, I've got my eye on a couple of Hilux's at the moment.

Sprinter-Saurus Just out of curiosity what is your reasoning for buying a Hilux?
Work, 4WDing, towing? as it came to my attention that you can pick up 80 series Cruisers pretty f**king cheap these days, and it will kill the Hilux with 4WDing and towing, it just lags behind with the fuel bill and the fact it has no tray on the back.

Just to get people thinking next time there looking for a 4WD

I suppose I like their reliability, or reputation that comes from their reliability, plenty of aftermarket parts etc.

I'll be doing a bit of 4WD'ing, plenty of towing, there's a 1UZFE Hilux that I'm considering, or possibly a turbo diesel 2.8L, I like the fact I can throw dirty tools and parts and tyres and whatever in the back of a ute, that's why I was also considering a Troopy for being able to throw shit in the back and know it's all sweet.

I'm sort of after a compromise of both power and economy, that's why a turbo-diesel is appealing in either a Hilux or Troopy, but then the 1UZ in a Hilux is so tempting aswell hehe. I'm not going to be doing hardcore 4WD'ing, just some sand driving and maybe a bit of mud and light bush work, so a slightly lifted Hilux or Troopy sounded good to me.

I'm guessing plenty of people have thrown 80 Series Landy's on LPG so that would be good on the fuel side of things, I'll have to check out some prices. Cheers for the heads up dude.

Hey Guys,

I like the 80 series. Great lookin rig.
For a daily driver, or people mover I'm a 100% on em!
80 series are nice trucks, alot nicer than the hiluxs, alot bigger than the hiluxs and
ALOT heavier/bulkier. But that is also their disadvantages... Even though I love the 80s,
I would like to see an 80 series go as far as my hilux without completely smashing the
rear of the body up. I can write off 60% of the body of my car and just unbolt it and make
a new tray. SO sweet. You can "bob an 80 series, but you need engineers cert and
a HEAP of panel work to get it done.

Not to mention the sheer size of the truck being moved along on hilux diffs/CVs
(see next paragraph)
does not make me overly confident in them for HARDCORE wheeling.
especially when you add 35"s tyres, twin lockers and crawler gears.

You see after looking at em the 80 series and the hilux have the same CV joints!
The Landcruiser front diff centre is the same size as the hilux solid axles,
only flipped over to work in reverse, and in high pinion configuration
(this HC pinion is completely swappable with the lux one)
this configuration actually makes the crown teeth weaker and makes the CVs about the
same strength as those in the lux!
This is one of the most common areas of complaints in the FJ80 Cruisers, and I have
personally watched 2x 80 series strip their front crown wheels reversing up an incline to
recover themselves or another vehicle.
(nissan GQ patrol CVs are about 3mm thicker in the CV bell so not much better and
in fact are not as good a design as the ASIAN CVs.)

Plus if you bury an 80 in a water hole, it cost big $$$$ to repair, trust me those cruiser
motors are PRICEY!!!! More than a 1UZ!!!
whereas I have had the old 22RC in water so bad the distributor filled up with water,
but I got it started with a $5 can of WD40!
I have also tore the bottom radiator hose off on a broken tree, then drove for another 20
minutes of 30 deg muddy incline driving on HOT to get away from what we thought was
a certain night out in the bush. But it made it out, got boged up with H20 and I drove
the 2 hours home again. I have NEVER known of a car more reliable than my hilux.
I have 3 mates who all have similar stories, and they all caine shite out of theirs.
ALL THE TIME! Wether its the 2.4L Petrol or the 2.4L Diesel you can't really go wrong.
Whereas I know of quite a few people who have HAD TO SELL their 80series, due to
size, cost on fuel or is on the way to major mechanical repairs.

So if you want a NICE 4WD, for DAILY purposes and Towing. Get the 80 Series.
If you want a 4WD, for ANY purpose, from touring to COMP TRUCK, get a LUX!
Cause REAL AUSSIES DRIVE UTES.

PS. I don't wanna piss off any cruiser owners, cruisers rule, they are the big brother
of the hilux, and will always be the benchmark in luxury 4WDing, but I like lotsa mud
and big-ass rocks with a few trees thrown in for good measure. The mod-cons are
secondary to offroad ability. I dont even have carpet anymore. LOL

I know a few people have left some drive line behind on some of these tracks

all i know is that the cruiser has more power and is the choice of more serious 4WDer's in Australia and Malaysia

but they both have there quality's and are both Toyota

I just got back an hour ago from my "test" trip to the Watagan Mountains.
And all i can say is DAMN.
Wait till you see the vids.

A mate ROLLED his lux into a pond, then sunk it! LOL was piss funny.
We got him out and he drove home, just took some time to get him out of the water.

Hey bubs,

My bad dude,
I made a mistake, it is actually the 60 series landy that shares CV joints with the hilux,
I'm pretty sure I fitted a 40S CV in my hilux too with a small bit of modification (very small)

My mate Richo did a shiteload of comparing the CVs in the 80S vs hilux/60s vs GQ.
But even with the 80S, only the bell is bigger, the internals appear to be the same size as the hilux/60S jobbies...
So it is fairly likely that any of the 3 CVs (Hilux, 60S or 80S) will break given the same amount of torque as with CVs its usually the case of the weakest link to go first.
At least this is my experience with CVs.

I stayed up last night uploading the footage of the mud-hole that killed my alternator
and put about 10Kgs of mud and logs and crap in and around my engine bay.

but it was soooooo worth it.

Let me just say that 22R's are THE SHIT! This is not the first, or the last time I have
driven in this sort of crap. I have put this motor underwater more times than I can
remember, and it still comes back for more. Show me another engine that will deal
with this much abuse day in and day out for the last 5.5 years!
I have nearly clocked up 100,000Kms on my rig and 90% of it was clocked up
OFF ROAD! Just like in the video!!!
As I have said before, I have never owned a more reliable truck than this one,
and its fair to say I will NEVER sell it. EVAH!!!!!!
