if they are the same as pretty much every other toyota its just a float that is hooked up to an idiot light
maybe get a multimeter to confirm that you have continuity when the float is in the empty sump position
Anybody know how these work? looking at the wiring diagram they seem a simple idiot light, but I cannot figure out.

That what i have thought, but testing with a multimeter showed the sensor has continuity reguardless of float position.
maybe check for resistance while moving the float see if it changes
ok just connected Ohms meter across the 2 terminals and moved the float up and down, there was no change in the value reguardless of the float position any other suggestion?
Busted sensor?

I have this sensor wired up and working in my Wagon. From memory Mos had to use the control box for it from the halfcut.

OK, so where is Mos, sounds like he could give me the help I need.
Gee I 'm glad Toyota did n't include the control box in the wiring diagram I might have had problems getting to work........
I've connected the toyota sensor to the BMW computer and it seems to be one 'step' out..
Ie when I get oil level sensor error on the dash, oil is low and when I get oil level low the oil level is okay...
I had a play with meter and got the same results, so gave up and am dealing with it

BMWTurbo, is your sensor error on the dash an idiot light or a guage?
I think they're inductive, but haven't scoped so only a hypothesis.
Newer clusters run these sensors directly. In older cars, such as a JZA70, there is a separate "ECU" for this sensor to allow it to connect to an idiot light. Rod's car has this additional ECU out of a JZA70 halfcut hooked up (even though the original engine was out of a JZZ30). I don't know if there is another source of these ECUs, but it's likely.

Rogue, It's actualyl computer controlled. Has 'oil pressure sernsor fail', ' oil pressure low' and nothing if it's all okay...
