    Default Hilux power possibilities...

I just got myself my first project - a Straight 81 Hilux with a 2-litre engine and 4-speed box. I don’t really know much about it, however, what I do know is that the engine with 280,000kms is tired/inadequate to carry the said 1550kg kerb weight alone.

I’m looking for options for reconditioning/ modification or swapping of the engine and drivetrain. Looking at putting in something reliable, naturally aspirated and is a Toyota. would like to steer clear of V6 crappodore combos that are seen in so many hiluxes! The engine also cant be too tall as the car will be lowered, and I’m not interested in it sticking out the hood.

I would have a budget of around $5 000 for the engine and gearbox, and would like to rebuild the engine myself if possible. I will be doing the majority of the work myself and the engine would probably be asked to carry a couple of four stroke motorbikes at most.

A couple I have been thinking about
4age – not enough power (for carrying and towing)
3sge – has it got the carrying power?
Im not real knowledgeable on any of this, however am willing to learn.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Looks like the 7mgte and the 1ggte are the go. 7ms bust out on headgaskets pretty frequently right? im probly better off going with a 1ggte, with a 5 speed box and decent aftermarket engine managment for best results? Should i get a halfcut with the 1g so that the loom ect are intact? i should pay around 1500-2000 for a decent unit?

Good luck finding a 1g-gte these days...

I"ve got like three of them in my shed, seems like they're about the only 3 left in australia that aren't in cars already. Hehe.

I realy want to do something out of the ordinary, but not outragious.

so things like the 2j 1j 1uz are somewhat farmiliar to the hilux engine bay.

if im going to spend a fair slap of money on the conversion i want people to be saying - i havent seen that conversion done, or damn i wouldent have thought of that. However, im probly a bit late to have the first, i would like to be one of very few, i dont know if that makes sence tho.

would an injected 2tgeu be any good? or even a supercharged 1ggte might be a little different/more reliable than a turbo variant?

different doesnt mean better. FWIW I would take a 1jz in a hilux every single day of the week over a 2tgeu! You won't be the first because it is popular. Snd there are certainly good reason why they are popular

1uzfe on gas. you want a bit of torque and on gas you only have to worry about ignition control. engines are cheap as chips and relitively common conversion for hiluxes.

that or a 308 on gas
