Default GUIDE - Cheap AE92 Quick Shift

The missus has been whinging about the long gear-throw of her AE93 SX seca, so i decided I'd do something about it.... cos i hate whinging.

Now this one was surprisingly pretty simple, and is something I feel is often overlooked by you Corolla folk.....

    Teh Cheap AE92 Quickshiftah

    STEP 1:
Get ye to your local self serve wreckers. Pick'n'payless is my no.1 choice

    STEP 2:
Find an AE101/AE102 manual, and reef out the gearstick selector assembly.

    STEP 3:
Go home, and pull the selector assembly from your AE92...

you should now have two sets of parts like this. Note the extra length of the AE101 shifter arms here!!

    STEP 4:
Take the spring and the little side pivot arm off the AE92 shifter, we will be using this one!

    STEP 5:
Assemble, using the two AE101 parts shown above, as well as the side pivot arm and spring form your AE92.

NOTE: You will have to space up the side pivot arm about 6-8mm, otherwise the side cable will catch on the floor.
You can see here that I did this using a couple of nuts as spacers.

NOTE: You also need to take note of how the little spring thingy goes back on, otherwise the stick won't centre itself very well/at all.

And here's the whole thing assembled.... and finished:

    Very nice thinking there Karl.

    Couple of questions tho:

1: How much shorter is the throw?
2: The AE101/102 shifter arm is quite a bit straighter than the AE92 one. Does the gear knob sit much differently in the odd gears? I'd imagine it'd have some tilt...

it's actually not much straigher at all - look closely at the pic and you can see that they arent at the same angle lying on the ground.

The shift is probably about 15-20mm shorter forward-back - not *that* massive - but the big improvement is the distance between rows (left-right)!

IE - going from 2nd-3rd is very quick as the left-right distance is reduced heaps, thank to the longer length of the L-shape arm from the AE101.... most people i've seen do a similar swap to this dont use this little arm and so they really only improve their forward-back distance.

Cost - well i got the shifter with a massively piled wheelbarrow full of interior bits, all for $70

yes:My custom quick shift (BIG PIX)
but i still don't understand is the 101 side arm longer?
nice work wish i had thought of that
Time is priceless yet it costs us nothing.
You can do anything you want with it but you can't own it.
You can spend it but you can't keep it.
And once you've lost it, there is no getting it back, it's just gone."

The part that affects the left-right movement is the top part in the picture below.

The very top part is the AE101, and the one immediately below is the AE92. Obviously you can see the AE101 is a fair amount longer from pivot point to cable point, meaning less movement of the stick to create the same amount of movement in the cable

    Nice work, +rep.

Just one question, would this work for an AE82 shifter, or is the mechanism different?

FWIW we took my old short shifter out and bolted it into an ae82 some years back with relative ease so no, you shouldn't have any problems..
    Cheers,
