Default cressida centre into hilux/hiace housing G series

Did a search and didn't come up with anything.

I have a Hiace diff housing with a 4.6:1 centre in it. I don't want that ratio. Everybody says there are heaps of ratios available. So I have found a Cressida centre which AFAIK is a 3.9:1.

So cressida is IRS. Hilux/Hiace isn't. Hiace has the normal style diff where you remove it all from the front. IRS is apparently like borg warner style where it has an inspection plate and you remove it from the rear.

So how do I get my 3.9:1 ratio from cressida into hilux housing? Is it a home job or would I have to give it to a diff place?

I just rang a diff place and they are trying to find out.

I know solid diff centres can't go into IRS but I was told it was fine for the other way around.

    Thanks

    Chris

    hey chris
I just did this exact conversion, i had a hilux diff with a 4.3 open and i had an IRS supra 3.7 LSD gearset i swapped over.

First thing i noticed is the IRS g series bearings are about 3x the size as the hilux ones. It is definetly not a DIY job unless you own mills, machines, etc etc. Needs specific bearings, some machining etc

Mine cost me $550 installed ready to go.
Gabba gearboxes did mine for me.

forgot to mention, if you just want to swap the gearset, you still need all new special bearings for the bigger pinion into the hilux carrier.

Honestly, dont swap an open diff tho...get an LSD first.

I just finished talking to mechanic/engineer and he said he doesn't think it can be done. He was saying that either the crown or pinion gear is longer.

Also, as the IRS setup has CV joints that hold the axles in place the setup would require some sleeves or something to hold the axles in place.

What a pain in the ass!

The diff shop I rang said it can't be done. You have proved them wrong but obviously not a bolt in job like I was expecting initially.

For that price, I may as well get a 3.7:1 hilux centre that bolts right in.

CIG locker BTW. Drag racing is primary focus. If I can find an LSD cheap then I will use it though.

the axles are floating man, they just flop out if you wallop them - no different to a solid axle!

just trust me this can be done - i have one sitting in my hilux atm...Im sure if i did a little more myself it woulda been cheaper than 550 too.

the pinions are "NOT" longer, they are just bigger in diameter due to the gearset matching differences.

I have a 4.3 open diff with bearings you can "have" here if you want? its out of my hilux...

This is what I have found. I do believe you that the diff can go in there as you have obviously done it but I do wonder why the diff shop tells me it can't. I might ring this Gabba place.

    5. Can I get an LSD?
The ring and pinion gears can be replaced from any other diff from the
    same series (eg D, T, F, G).
Doesn't matter if mixing from solid axle, unitary axle, or IRS.
LSD centre (with or without gears) can replace centre from diff in same
    series.
Changing ratio will affect the speedometre (change geabox speedo drive gear).

5c. Hilux 2# rear axle has strong G series diff with 10" drum brakes.
Can get other ratios and LSD from landcruiser and late Hilux models.
Can get other ratios and LSD from some Cressida models (eg MX83 Grande).

all G series diffs are interchangeable.

I have to disagree with this Norbie. Phil (Traction_issuse) tried to get a torsen center from a JZA70 fitted to his hillux carrier and it couldn't be done, the crown was in a different position (pinion offset was different). I have his torsen center at home and will try fitting it to the Cressida carrier someday.

    Rang Gabba Gearboxes.

First fella said that C&P couldn't be changed as they are different (hiace and cressida).

Second fella said that if the C&P are the same then they should be able to go into my current hilux carrier as long as the flange is the same and the cressida uses the same spline and size axles as the hiace.

did u tell them they just did mine? they were a bit sceptical about mine too until i drove it into their heads that its been done before....and they did a fucking good job of it too i might add, good service, so ill use them again despite being a little bit pricey.

I have a JZA70 torsen centre fitted to an RN41 hilux diff in my Mk2 Corona. It can be done, I posted up a thread about it a while back.

Robbo and "SilliCarS" have both fitted IRS gearsets into live centres, although IMHO you are better off getting a Hilux gearset to start with, less headaches this way.

    Just my 2c

mx83 grande is g series...although i am yet to see one at UPI lonsdale to fully verify it.
Brett_celicacoupe also was selling an mx83 Grande centre a little while ago which he also touted as g series.

rang Gabba gearboxes again. I told them about your job Blake and it sort of refreshed his memory but he can't remember what he did.

I also rang western suburbs diffs and that difflapping place and they couldn't help me.

Gabba said that I would have to bring the housing and cressida centre to them and then they can determine what needs to be done. Couldn't give me a quote and also being in Brisbane doesn't really help me.

So I might just buy the cressida diff, get the hilux centre out, take it to my local place and tell them that I know it can be done so please do it however the hell you do it. ??? Or ring some wreckers and try and find a hilux 4.1 or 3.7?

Chris - search for the thread that pure in sanity posted a while back when he did this swap.

From memory.... the crown wheel needs to be offset, the pinion ground down a little, and some "special" bearings used.

my memory is p00 tho, so search and read for yourself
