You can put a w50 5 speed behind the venerable 3,4y you may need to change the bell housing. But I have swapped a auto from a 85 hilux to a w50 with no problems.
No prblems with any of the above. Just a matter of finding the parts.

so, the w50 goes on the 3 and 4y engine, but unsure about the 1y. so i might need the the 3/4y bellhousing as well as the trans?

Have you done a search on gear box swaps, I am sure ther is a heap of info there.
What I did is removed the old gearbox and went down to the wreckers and got them to make sure the gearbox I purchased would mate up no problems as it was easy to compare them all whilst they were on the ground and compare them to the motor.
I think the 5 speed is longer and you may need to look at crossmember and tailshaft , speedo fits no probs and clutch was no probs. Did this about 5 years ago so tring to remember.

Any transmission from a Y series engine will fit on your Y series engine. Gearbox crossmember and tailshaft are a different story, but you haven't told us which Hilux you have or what the current gearbox is. Check the build plate and post your trans code if you want more specific help.

OK, someone will confirm but I'm pretty sure the L42 is the column-shift version of the W40/W50 boxes, in which case you should be able to graft your L42 bellhousing onto a W50 gearbox (eg from an RA40 Celica) and bolt it in.

Yes and yes. The W50 is found in the RA23, RA28 and RA40 Celicas so in my area at least there are still quite a few to be found at the wreckers.

If you have problems finding one you could also use a W55/57/58 but this will involve more work and you won't be able to use your existing bellhousing so you'll have to source another one.
