Default Ceramic coating, yes or no?

    Hey,

I've got mild steel intercooler piping, it was meant to be stainless so the shop that done it have offered to ceramic coat it for me.

Just want to know what peoples thoughts are? Or what other options are there? like HPC coating etc...

    Cheers,
    Jon

Ceramic/HPC coating is the shizzle if you can afford it. The pipe won't rust and the thermal insulation properties are excellent. Mild steel + HPC is definitely better than plain stainless.

    I say sweet!

HPC'd mild steel is better than stainless...both for bling and function!

As said it isn't that cheap...

    Score

Yep, it is in my opinion... Don't know the full benifits of it though myself. ^_^ But it's more to add to the shopping list. ~_^

yup if you are trying to keep heat out, do it. it's free..

and get manifold, dump, exhaust cover etc done at same time

It's free - get it done. Thermal insulation props are the goods. IMHO, looks bling too.

Ask them if they want to do my exhaust, dump pipe, manifold and cooler piping for free while you're there...

    Cant hurt.

i cant understand the reason for insulating a component thats removing heat from your charge air for free!! .... Hell why not get the intercooler done too so theres no thermal drop at all!

ok maybe.... and its a big maybe... on the post cooler side but i very much doubt anyone has charge air colder than the engine bay on a boosted engine while its traveling down the road.

yea great for exhausts but on intercooler piping has the oposite undesired affect..... the ultimate intercooler pipe would be thin aluminium or copper with fins on it!!

    good point
but in a choice of stainless, or mild with coating... both are not so great for heat removal (or insertion)...
at least coated mild will not rust...

then again..... if they made it in mild, then surely remaking it in stainless will cost abotu the same or less than getting it coated??? (sicne it didn't cost much fro mild materials in the first place )

More to the point, if you have good intercooling it keeps the heat out of the after intercooled piping.
The lower you can keep the before intercooler air is also a benefit on very hot days, everything adds up.

HPC wasn't "that" expensive, when I called I got the following quote.

    $22 Acid Wash (I think)

    $187 for 4cyl extractors.

$16.50 per foot thereafter (secondaries etc).

    $15.50 delivery each way

    Polished alloy Finish

The reason i would be getting the cooler piping done is because a) it's free because they used mild instead of stainless, and b) the mild won't rust like it is starting to now in places where the paint is a little thin.

The ideal charge of air into an engine is cold and dense. Whilst the density part is a little harder to control, if you coat your intercooler pipes it will keep the cold air in and help protect it from the heat of the engine bay...that's how i see it
