Default short stroke shock absorbers for AE86

Hi all, I would have searched for this, but these forums haven't been up for long enough, and the way the tech section of the new improved toymods are going, this thread should actually stay pretty relevant!

I was all keen to buy a set of tokico HTS 102s for my sprinter, but they are no longer in production.

    Reasons for the 102s was:

    cheap

    short stroke

    easily adjustable.

I'm researching what to use now, but would appreciate other people's ideas.

how much shorter do you actuayll need the shock to be? how much suspension movement are you willign to lose?

Ill just throw in the KYB AGX's. Cant remember any of the original measurements but hey...
Bilstein make some good short stroke shocks to fit the AE86, as do Koni i believe. But you had better believe that they will be exxy.

    kyb agx's are:

    body length 332mm
    total extended length 558mm
total compressed length 385mm(roughly...it's damn hard to hold it compressed, AND measure)

i know this, cos i've got them here...for sale...

oldcorrolas, i want to chop out about 2.5-3 inches of travel.

about one inch of travel will be regained, as i have ghetto'd my bump stops.

have to be short stroke so my springs dont fall out when doing drifts

steve, by 4 way adjusutable, do you mean

    low speed bump
    high speed bump
    low speed rebound
    high speed rebound

    or something else?

thought about using standard stroke shocks.... and rethreading the top of the shock rod a few inches further down?

keep your travel, get your ride height...

not really, not too keen on cutting thread into metal, as i would assume the standard thread is rolled on.

also, my current shocks (KYB standard replacement) are not suited to the spring rates i want to run.

dont want them bottoming out either.

4 dampening settings like any other shock. it even has the numbers 1,2,3,4 on the top, and a little flathead screw driver that comes with it.

i'm going to bump this back up, as I understand it better now.

I have looked into getting the Konis, but they aren't short enough for what i want and while they are reasonably priced, i don't think they will have the range of adjustment that i want.

Looking at going with the KYB AGX, of the following numbers (thank to all who have contributed in the various threads concerning this topic, both on this forum and others)

these seem like the best option so far

    Front: SW20 Rear 4 way adjustables P/N: (KYB) 765016
Rear: "Camaro" 8 way adjustables P/N: (KYB) 743019

i'm pretty sure the camaro shocks are the same as certain commodore rear shocks, so shouldnt be too hard to get hold of.

I need to chekc the dimensions of the rear shocks, but the fronts will give me the modest reduction in captive length that i need.

you could use the st204 celica shock, there 70mm shorter. (what im running) i can go from rock hard kidney damage to a fairly comfortable ride.
im using the IRS commo 8 way's at the rear. same thing with the stiffness. picked up all of them for 150 each brand new. (and yes, thats well, well below retail)
AE86 - coming soon to a quiet mountain pass near you...

TRD short stroke adjustable race shocks are another option,
I got a quote a couple of months back (cant find it now)
but for both front and rear shocks and spring it came it just over $1000 trade price.
which i thought was very cheap compared to the Bilstein's on the car now ($3000)
fronts were 48511-AE031 5 stage adjustable rate
rears were 48531-AE831 8 stage adjustable rate

    Ben.
