Manual gearbox into MX83 Cressida?

A mate of mine has just done the 1JZ and R154 conversion in his MX83. He is now up to the stage of fitting the tailshaft.
From what I have read, he needs a custom tailshaft??
He wants to know if he can use any of the existing unit??
I'm assuming no...

you can get the R154 yoke put onto the front MX83 shaft if the uni's are in good condition.

You have to measure the length of the shaft from the center uni flange to provide to the driveshaft shop so they make the shaft the right length, you also have to provide both sections of the shaft to the shop so they can balance the whole assembly.

Other times I've found R154 and A34x output shafts to be the same, as well as the gearbox mount and shaft length. Why wouldn't this apply to MX83?

A34x/R154 have the same output shafts, but the auto front section is about 1-1.5 inches too short.

it fits, but doesnt go in nearly enough to let you feel confident about it.

probably enough to drive very lightly to the tailshaft shop to get it fixed though.

Hey All,
I know i'm digging up an old thread...but
I went to Toyota and ordered all the parts listed by Stevevp and after receiving them all i'm just having a few issues.
Has anyone else purchased this pedal set and put it all together and can tell me how the spring works?
I've searched everywhere including the http://www.toyodiy.com site with its epg
and i still can't find a diagram of where the spring sits etc. It's way different to the ones listed for the GX81, and the mark 3 pedal set i have has a spring mounted on the side.

Any assistance would be great, if its easier i can take some pics to show what i mean.

Hey, put up some pics about the parts you have.

I have an assembled GX81 pedal box and have included the pics so hopfully they help you out. Clutch on the left and brake on the right.

Makes it clear i did have it assembled right it was just messing with my head how when you push it forward (not installed to the car or clutch master) that it goes so far and then flicks, i kept thinking that it must have been the spring not in the right way.
How much movement does your pedal have when its installed?
I've had a look at my dad's hilux 2007 model and its got a similar spring but not with the two sides with the tail like the GX81 does. Mum's Pajero has a spring on the side like the mark 3 one...
I've got everything i need to convert my MX83 over, and just trying to work it all out so i can minimise downtime. I'd love it to be a weekend job.
I converted a ST141 Corona from auto to manual years ago and it was easy cause everything i got was all ST141 straight up. lol
Also yet to decide if i use the original brake bracket with the mark 3 pedal i have or just put the mark 3 one as a unit in.

Hey Herus,
Most of the prices have gone up obviously, i think i got some of the last bits avail in Oz according to the parts tracking thing at Toyota.
I think the master cylinder was rarest.
I've gotta grab all the paperwork and post up the prices.
I'm stuffed where i put them atm.
I think they're prolly in the boot of my parts car along with the rest of the manual associated bits. lol.

Also has anyone seem that old doc from thermactor that used to be avail thru Cressida forums?
I used to have it saved even though its LHD it was still nice for pics.

Well after so much searching, it turned up its not in the parts car at all!
These are all AUS Inc GST prices
The dealer here was pretty good cause i had such a list of bits to get he did a bit better prices.
Master Cyl was bout $260, but list price has gone up to 290!
Pedal Box bout $110
Pedal bout $99 the all the assorted bushings were up a little bit.

Overall the bits for the pedal and sub assembly was $267 + the Master Cylinder $260.
All this $ just to avoid having to modify bits and drill holes.
I did find however i'm still missing a few bits like nuts to go on the bolts and the bolt for the other adjustment.


Toyota no longer has the hard line or soft line for the clutch avail. but i think that a clutch/brake place should hopefully be able to make one up.

Thats about $300 cheaper then anywhere else I've seen it..
