Default 4AGTE - Exhaust manifold warping

    Hi Guys,

I have a 4AGTE and have recently had the exhaust manifold warp. It has only done about 5000kms. What basically happens is the plate that bolts onto the engine block gets too hot and warps. exhaust pressure is then lost and the car sounds sick.

Has anyone had this problem before? Is this just a poorly developed exhaust manifold?

I not sure if I should be looking at bracing the manifold more for less movement and sticking a flex pipe down under the dump pipe and hopefully this wont happen again OR go and get a better manifold.

    What do you think?

    Any help appreciated. thanks

    How thick is the plate?

is your turbo braced to support the weight??

does the manifold plate have sections cut into it to reduce overall magnitude of expansion? ie doesn't have a straight bar going from one side to the other?

yes, my manifold does this. i have had to have it machined once, and welded up many times from it cracking. however i have a fairly hefty sized turbo with no bracing, and my suspension itsnt even that stiff at the moment. anyone got any ideas on bracing the turbo? the only way i can think is to get sections selded in from the head flange to the turbo flange, or possibly a brace from the turbo to the engine mount?

Turbo to engine mount sound like the go to me.

The plate is about 10mm thick and the turbo isnt braced.Im running a t28 so i wouldnt think that turbo is that heavy. Although it also supports the weight of the exhaust.

The plate is not straight from one end to the other. It basically shapes the the bolts and exahaust outlets.

I've had a couple of studs put in to replace the bolts on either end of the manifold. Apparently this is alot stronger.

Could it be an engine movement thing? If I got stronger engine mounts to reduce the movement, will this improve?

The other option is the bracing I think. Sometimes you just cant fight the movement so you just need to work with it.

has anyone braced their turbo and where would be the best location?

Some Flex pipe on the exhaust and a brace from the turbo to engine mount would do a world of wonders

ok sounds like a plan. I'll get a flex pipe done and some bracing. Do you think the exhaust shop will now how to brace it properly or should i take it back to the performance shop?

shouldnt be too hard just use ont of the bolts on the turbo and brace from that to the mount

Yup what 4agte said, unless your exhaust shop is full of numb nuts they should be able to work it out

A bit of steel tube/pipe crushed at each end with holes drilled to suit generally will do the trick

mine is one peice of steel the whole way over with no cut outs, 12mm thick and i made a brace. never had any problem with warpage at all.

you can see it in this pic, peice of square pipe squashed each end bolted to one point on the turbo flange and to the bottom of the block.

my experience with exhaust shops are that they arent the cluiest people. I'll look for a piece of metal and do it myself i think

on all my turbo setups ive just used 10mm thick flanges and no bracing what so ever. ive never had a proble with warpage. even if the flange isnt flat it should still seal when its bolted up, coz the bolts pull the flange flat. i usually use a stock toyota gasket too.
