    Default MX73 strut into AE86

I have searched high and low but can not find an answer....

Iam planning on using MX73 coil over struts, control arms and steering arms in my AE86. However the tie rod ends are loose in the MX73 steering arms.

Iam not keen on welding up the hole in the steering arms and re-cutting the taper as this may introduce cracks.

What combination of tie rod ends, rack end etc will work?

Is there a Steering arm off a Celica, Corona etc that bolts up to the bottom of the MX73strut and matches the tie rod ends and will give me close to the correct ackermann angle? I am not worried about the lower ball joint as I can use the AE86, MX73 LCA orswap ball joints etc.

Or is their someone out there making taper adapters?

    Thanks

From the small amount of playing around I've done at wreckers, it seems like the thread on the rackends are pretty standard (at least across Toyotas and Nissans).

So I'd suggest MX73 tie rod ends and AE86 rack ends. Though that combination may not be long enough. Another option is RA60 rack ends, though I'm not 100% sure they are any longer.

Also be careful with LCA length as depending on the strut geometry you could end up with positive camber.

    Thanks Hen

I will check out the MX73 and RA60 tie rod ends and see if they are long enough, I may have to visit pick and payless this weekend and check it out

MX73 and AE86 LCAs are the same length, by eye anyway, so that should not be an issue, unless the angle between the stub and strut upright is vastly different. I have the choice of MX73 and ST141 struts which are identical except for that angle, so the MX73 brakes will fit either. But I will keep it in mind.

Do you know if the rack ends from either a RA60 or MX73 screw into an AE86 rack?

RA60 rack ends definitely screw into AE86 rack. Never tried MX73, though I'd be suprised if they didn't.

I'm interested to see how you go with this, as the MX73 struts will allow you to bolt up R33 skyline 4 spot calipers & BA falcon discs for a brake upgrade that would be close to overkill for a smaller car.
    Good luck with it!

i have st141 struts and s14 brakes on my 86.

the struts dont fit on the steering arms. how do you think the mx73 arms will go with regards to steering lock? and what would you use for RCA? customs?

MX73 steering arms are the same length and angle, by eye, as AE86 manual steering arms so the lock should be unchanged.

As for RCAs I could make some custom ones or see if these fit http://www.technotoytuning.com/productdetail.php?p=472

Hen is an RA60 tie rod end and its matching rack end the same lenght as the AE86 tie rod end and matching rack end? Or the other way of looking at it, is the LCA of a RA60 the same lenght as the AE86, because if it is then the tie rods/rack end combination should be a similar lenght, right? I need new rack ends anyway

Therefore if I use ST141or MX73 struts RA60 tie rod ends and rackends with MX73 LCA
and an RCA either custom or from the above web site I should be pretty close to the original geometry. Good theory anyway

I have something to go on now, will keep you posted.

    Thanks Guys

Nah, because to fit them you need 16" rims, and we are restricted to running 60 profile (for Early Model). 60 profile in 16" is either cheese cutters or ridiculously large.

well, i shall be going to get some mx73 steering arms and checking them out.

i was going to elongate a hole on my existing 86 arms. bit i think its a bit to dodgy for my liking.....

minorobsession, i can confirm that RA60 steering rack ends are longer, i used them in my S13 coilover conversion. about 15-20mm from memory

    Thanks Gilly

What about the RA60 rack end with a RA60 tie rod end srewed on compared to an AE86 rack end with a AE86 tie rod end screwed on?

My guess is that the RA60 tie rod end is shorter than an AE86 so the assemble set should be close, right?
