    Default 18R-G Distributor Postion

    Hey guys,

I've been trying to get my 18R-GU started, but I'm having troubles...

I have fuel, spark and compression, but no joy!

I think the timing may be out, and I dont have a timing light, so I've been looking at most of the 18R-G images from other people's rides to get a rough postion (which is different to where mine was sitting) so as I can at least get the thing started...

This is how I've figured that it should roughly look when looking directly at it:

    Is this roughly correct?

Put you motor on #1 ignition mark on harmonic balencer, check that it is ignition stroke by blowing down spark plug hole with a bit of hose, if it builds up pressure it is ignition, if blows through inlet exhaust rotate motor 180 degrees.

Decide which plug lead position on cap you want to be #1, put dizzy in block with Rotor button pointing to that position, rotate dizzy until points just start to open, lock off.

Should start and run if everything else is happening as you said with fuel and spark etc.

    regards
    Jon

    rough guide

no 1 on tdc (take out number one plug put a long screwdriver in and find tdc on timing mark)
put dizzy in with no 1 breaker open to get timing roughly right

you can move the dizzy a little bit to get it to start.

    BUT!!!!

if the motor has been running and the distributor has not been recently removed it is probably not a timing problem.

on my 18rg the number 1 position for the rotor is more like about 30 degrees. from 12 o clock
here is a pic of mine at tdc

the order is right though next clockwise position is 3, then 4, then 2
