The disc brake unit i've been looking at is a multi stud (10? need to count them), so there isn't any room to drill a hole in-between any of the existing ones....if that makes sense.

i think you will find that there are 7 (or was it 9?)holes already in the disc in total...

Heaps of us have had it done... so it can be done as was stated earlier.

Ah ok - so they're all like that. I wasn't sure if they were just 5 stud, or a multi-stud disc.

I have no doubt that it can be filled and drilled - but i eventually need the car engineered, and i've spoken to the engineer and he says its not allowed (well at least on the axles).

I'm thinking of swapping over some corona brakes i have lying around...but then its about the same effort as shortening a commodore rear end

    EDIT: here's a picture -

No idea, sorry. Could be 1-series, early 2-series, Amazon, P1800, they all had basically the same axle, only the earliest ones lack disc brakes. I do believe all 2-series are 1400~1410 disc to disc. Stock LSD is very very rare btw.

Only the latest 2-series had 1031, all the other older ones 1030. There's some debate about cutoff date ; best I can do for sure is "somewhere in the first half of the '80s". Visual identification is possible but difficult.

Volvo 7-series is all 1031 but useless unless you were going to shorten it anyway - it's a full 10cm longer than a 2-series diff. Volvo 9-series solid axle is the same width but could be a 1041, not really sure about the difference.

    hi mate,

looking at that pic, it look like it has already been drilled again....

I was sure the holes were different sizes etc....

Ill have a look at mine today and get back to you.

The axles were filled and re-drilled, but the discs normally have enough meat to get away with it. but looking at yours, i agree, and see why you dont think it will work...

    I'll get back to you.

    Cheers

just an update for those in my truetrac group buy - the diffs have arrived
See the group buy thread for details.

78rolla - yeah definitely looks like someone has already re-drilled your discs. I would normally replace them anyway, so no biggy.... what are your axles like tho? Can you put up a pic of them?

Hi all, this thread is gold as I am in the process of doing up my RA23. I have the front sorted with the age old Corona/Hilux set up and was looking for options on a budget for the rear as my centre is shagged anyway and would hit me about $400 just to get it reco'd.

My question is about what stud spacing to go for as its makes no difference seeing I have to change the Volvo PCD anyway. 4 x 114.3 is like hens teeth. Ideally would keep the original PCD if anyone has ideas on bigger wheels but not too fussed if I change it.

I currently have 14" BBS style wheels and am after the best size to go for visually (don't like the hot wheels massive wheel look), for handling, availability and cost. Eg Commodore PCD, 5 x 100, 5 x 114.3???
After the BBS wire/lace style again too.

Here's a few picks of the axle...

So if my discs have already been drilled out that's kinda nice - although the problem is finding ones that are not drilled out (ie new ones) from a mystery car?!

i cant tell if those axles are still standard or not...

.... but i can tell that they are FREAKEN MASSIVE! No wonder these volvo diffs dont break - the axles are HUGE.

The place i took the axles to for an opinion on modifying to suit my car, told me they didn't appear shortened (as i originally suspected - since the axle you guys are talking about is longer), so i suspect they are stock.

I'll take some measurements of the disc/axle if anyone wants?

the 2 series volvo ran a couple of different rear discs, the "10" hole discs are of the later diff this allowed easier handbrake adjustment, most 740/760 turbo's ran lsd's and most commonly the earlier volvo's are manual (4spd with overdrive) i spent several years working for a volvo wrecker/repairer in brisbane, these diffs are quite popular with early holden owners aswell due to not needing to change stud pattern, also fyi volvo do a 15"chaser style rim also

I found a 4.1 ratio in I think a 740 or 760 Volvo, the later models (mid to late 80's?) that kinda looked a bit sportier, but still hell boxy...

I'm not sure what motor & trans combo it had, but pretty much all the volvo axles I've seen have had an I.D. sticker on the L/H axle tube that has the ratio on it, usually concealed by a bit of tape you can peel off. Spend some time at pickies checking these out on the later model volvos, I found one in the first & only late model the wreckers had in stock.

It also had a nice alloy rear cover with a speed sensor mounted in it, which might be a handy feature.
