Default 1JZ - Check Engine Light - Please Help!

    Hi All,

I've very recently done a 1JZ conversion on my Soarer. I took it down the road today after fixing its power steering and fitting an exhaust. After a fairly spirited blat down the road in first, second and then third I heard a "pffff" noise come from the engine bay, the check engine light came on and I couldn't rev the car at all. I rolled to a stop, got out and checked the visible hoses quickly.... nothing wrong

I started the car and drove off again... quite quickly the problem re-ocurred this time under barely any load. To test if this was something to do with the turbo I even rolled home in neutral with the car running and it still managed to die. I also started the car to move it, got out and it turned itself off again only seconds later.

Can anyone tell me which pins i need to bridge in the diag block? (TE1 and E1?) and does anyone have a link to what these codes mean? (I have searched already)

Thankyou in advance for any advice you can give!
    Dan

yes it is TE1 and E1 (or T1 and E1) it varies ....

umm... check the online TSRM for the MK3 or MK4 , all codes are identical between toyotas
check stupid things like sparkplugs and coils are plugged in , check fuel pump and fuel filter isnt blocked check ignitor is earthed ?

does it idle and not rev ?
    does it not start ?
does it run if you drive but not once idle ?
    etc etc

Give us more info we have loads of brain over here at Blacksupras

    Okay...

    It starts

    It idles

    It even drives

It just randomly seems to turn itself off. If it does this while the car is in motion, and the clutch is engaged then I can't rev the car at all.... I was having to grind to a complete stop, start it and drive off again until the random stall occurred once more. To give an indication of the frequency, on a 1.5km trip it happened 4 or 5 times.

The part that worried me was that before it started happening there was that "pff" noise from the engine bay... i'm not sure if it was a hose blowing off noise, or an electrical noise ie something not earthed properly and creating sparks.

I'm at my girlfriend's parents at the moment and am stinging to get back and find out what diagnostic code it can give me.

By the way... when it stalls, its instantaneous.... there is no struggle or rough idle by the engine, its just working and then off.

re-check connections - could be something as dumb as the igniter plug being loose.

does anything else die in the dash (e.g. radio)? maybe the whole car is turning off - indicating an electrical fault.

check all the hoses to everything thoroughly - even vacuum lines.

Not boost cut, it stalls at idle.... just simply turns itself off.

Am off to do this now. I'll come back with the error code!

Turning off instantly would imply electrical disconnection of some sort.

fuel running out (or the FPR not providing enough juice) would have engine stumble/cough/stall.

"No IGF signal to ECU for 4 - 7 consecutive IGT signals with engine speed less than 3,000rpm"

Can anyone explain this to me in laymans terms? Is IGF the ignitor?

IGF is a signal from the ignitor back to the ECU - it's the ignitor saying it had a 'good spark event' when it fired a coil. If the ignitor think's it didn't fire properly, it tells the ECU - enouhg of thse and the ECU turns the engine off.

trace wiring from plugs back to ignitor and from there back to the ECU.

Perhaps a Spark Plug gave way? (or coil pack)... Sorry, not very good with these things. ^_^'

i think the ignitor sense the ignition event electrically - a good zap draws significant current and the resistance across the plug gap is quite low - plus coil firing induces back-EMF (e.g. coil ringing) back down to the ignitor.

Guys - just checking... I've unplugged the battery for 5 minutes and then plugged it back in. The check engine light flashes constantly. I am assuming that this means that there are no error codes recorded?
