Check the resistance of the wire from the gauge to the sender. Also check the gauge and the sender are properly earthed. The fuel gauge is essentially an ohmmeter measuring the resistance of a potentiometer in the sender.
Has anyone fixed their bodgy RA 60-65 / SA 63 fuel gauge or know what the problem is & how to rectify it?
I've scoured the wrecking yards & every single 60-series Celica seems to have the same problem.
The first thing I did when I bought the car was to replace the sending unit in the fuel tank but it made no difference to the operation of the gauge which usually shows around 1/3 full. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Rob.

Ground the signal wire, this will force the gauge to go to either full, or empty. If the guage moves, the sending unit is stuffed, if the gauge doesn't move, the gauge is stuffed.

Thanks for the advice. I'll do those diagnostic checks on the wiring.
From what I've seen it must be a common problem with this model?

lol i thought my fuel gauge was the only stuffed. Well mines a ra63 not ra60 but look identical. Mines moves to only four different places empty, full, and 1/4 and 3/4. The only thing that seems to work correctly is the low fuel light which is my only help in knowing how much fuel i have in there.
