    Default Internal or External Wastgate?

    Can any of you turbo gurus explain the pros and cons of using an external wastegate. I sort of understand that an internal wastegate is an integral part of a turbo assembly with an actuator usually operated by some sort of vacuum control at a desired manifold pressure. It seems simple enough but here is where I show my ignorance. I am unsure as to what operates an external wastegate and what is the benifit of using this set up. I have also heard on this forum of people talking about a wastegate dump pipes. Is this down stream or the external w/gate and does this dump the exhaust/turbine gasses to atmosphere when it reaches the desired wastegate setpoint. The reason for asking is that I have a BMW X5 Garrett tubo assembly given to me and am not sure if this is the right way to go or to use a T3/4 with an external w/gate.

    External gates can regulate high boost levels and huge power outputs.

    There is still a vacuum line attached to the external gate and it's operated in the same fashion to an internal gate.

    The 'dump pipe' off the wastegate is either plumbed back into the exhaust, or vented to atmosphere (illegal) and is then called a screamer pipe.

    O/K. Thanks.That makes it a fair bit clearer. So external might be the better option.

    IF your looking at 500hp + then yes it would be.
