    Default 2TG/3T hybrid Wiseco pistons.

Does anyone know if the Wiseco pistons sold for a 3T need the valve pocket's enlarging to clear the valves when fitted to a 2TG head?

    Specifically Wiseco K508M87...that's 87mm.

I know if you buy Toyota 3T pistons they do, just hoping Wiseco don't need that.

Two different suppliers of the same piston have given me conflicting information!! One says Yes and one says No.

    Cheers.

    Brian,

You do not need to enlarge the valve pockets on Wiseco 3T pistons (I'm assuming valve pockets on 87mm diameter are the same as 89mm). There is plenty of room for the valves under a 2TG head - even when you break a valve spring. I dry checked the valve pockets/valves at max lift for interference with plasticine before putting the engine in the car.

Many thanks for that info Mike!

Long story short: my 2T block bored and sleeved to 89mm has warped. There is not enough metal between pistons 2 and 3 to dissipate the heat and so the bores have become oval and the sleeves have shifted ever so slightly.

I have it all out and stripped and will take pics and post them.

That's why the next block will be 87mm.

Sleeve the block, no more issues there.

    Hi Mate...........it's already been sleeved.

it was bored out to 89mm and the block went porous on first start up. It was then sleeved.
The trouble is that the water jackets were really cut in to and there is not much support in the centre of the block between 2 and 3 pistons which is allowing the block to distort once the head gasket is torqued down.

I have another block away for boring but this time I'll stick to 87mm.

yes, that will cousre issues for you.
Sounds like 87mm is the go then.
was the block rusted away or just not enough meterial from factory?

    dan.

Hi Dan.......the block had been stood unused for a long time before I got it and I just think it had rusted away too much from the inside.
I have got a much later block and in really good condition so boring it to 87mm should be ok.

I'm going to be using very short Wiseco pistons with longer rods. My mate built one like that for his TA40 rally car and although the engine isn't run in yet it really feels awesome. I've never blipped a 2TG or 18RG that spins up so quickly. It feels more like a BDA than a Toyota engine!
It's also getting some 440 lift cams so it should go well.

Well,my friend asked the machine shop to bore the 2T block until they find daylight..It was 92 mm.So any idiot can calculate what is the cylinder wall at 89 mm..

There could be different castings and I don't remember where that block come so maybe the 3T-GTE blocks were thicker.Anyone who knows tell..

Hi Morgo....I don't think anything can be taken for absolute with that experiment except for that particular block.

Mine was bored out to 89mm and the bores looked perfect. On the very first start up they went porous. When I stripped it the same day I could see two tiny pin holes in cylinder number 3 that showed signs of water leaking. I could not detect them before I fitted the cylinder head. The boring had breached the water jacket.
I think that each old block will vary as some will have stood dry for a long time and some will have had plenty of anti-freeze in them and each will corrode differently.

Anyway I have a really good newer block to start again with!

Update: I have another block and my crank is away being checked. After discussions with John I have decided to go the "long rod /short piston route" as John's 2tg blew me away.

It spun up faster than any 2TG I have ever tried and he has done a few major events in his car without issue.

It means fitting longer Eagle Nissan rods and short Wiseco pistons.....much, much lighter than the Toyota TRD pistons and std rods I was using.

Blipping his engine feels like there are no pistons in it...it just revs!

    Wish me luck!

What are the details on the longer Eagle Nissan rods and short Wiseco pistons out of interest?

The rods come from a Nissan SR20 Det.........I'm not sure of the Wiseco piston origin but they are very short and the rod length and those pistons is exactly the right stroke with a 3T crank.

I have part numbers for both items. They work.

Early narrow maybe 72-75 got thickest cylinder walls, but they are not rounded. And quite big tolerance at the cylinder walls.

Those block if they have round casting outside the cylinder wall, the block come to siamese, those can regonize when look between cylinders from water holes at the deck, put light to the other side and see from other side, you can see flat area there !! ~95mm in piston pin line, and otherway 100+ mm.

Most bad blocks have been first wide skirt blocks ~78-82 big tolerance how bore is centered and 92-95 mm outside diameter.

Latest 82+ "turbo cast" is really well centered and ~95mm outside diameter.

I have ~ 10 blocks now and cut pieces of at many old blocks and always check when possible to found info.

Something else can be found also, those are just my notes

Know old block used with 90.5mm flat top pistons and turbo, without problem. Morgo knows also may not remember. (Putkinen). But littlebit filled with filler.
