Default Zombie Supra: Rebuilding my stolen car

    Hello Everyone

    I have a 1989 Jza70 Supra

It had a Garret gt35 turbo. Emanage Ultimate piggyback, electronic boost controller, afr sensor etc etc.

Unfortunatly some asshole decided to steal my car.

It's been recovered but there is a lot of damage. I was hoping I could have some advice from people on here on how to fix it. I am an engineer so I know my way around machinery but I am not a mechanic.

First the locks and ignition barrel is destroyed. Are they a supra specific part? What range of model cars have locks that are compatible? Does anyone have a set for sale??

The engine got severly overheated. A coolant line for the turbo burst and they ran it until it stopped running. The engine is not seized but I worry about the condition inside. Is a compression test the best method to test it? I am guessing the head gasket could have blown.

The turbo is junk, the impeller shaft does not spin freely and there is oil in the intake. Anyone have any experiance in rebuilding? For fun I would enjoy rebuilding it. Unless there is a good reason why I should not do that in my shed.

Those are the three main problems I have. The electronics got stolen and the looms hacked but I can fix that.

Any assistance or advice would be appreciated. Or offers of spare parts

So sorry to hear, I have shannons insurance, I hope you did too.

Compression test is a good starting point, if you have even compression then it might be ok to just put a turbo on and run it, but who knows how hard they flogged it.

That sucks big time dude. Unfortunately its times like these you need to weigh up cost/value to you. Start with a worst case scenario and go from there - so new motor, turbo, loom, full lockset, ECU and if you can't do it yourself then price for a workshop to do it all. Scour the forums/facebook sales groups and start adding things up.
If insurance is going to pay out then it may even be worthwhile to take the money and buy another already with mods etc. Good luck with it all

    Nice car.

The best place to look for locks is a 90's Camry. Wreckers will have the locks. Find something that looks similar - it shouldn't be hard.

A locksmith can 'rebuild the barrel' of the locks to suite your key. It might not be a super cheap thing to do, but no worse than buying a transponder key for a Euro car.

There definitely are companies that can rebuild / recondition turbo's. So you're in luck there, they are found by searching 'turbo flow testers'. Sorry I don't know any in Victoria.

    Good luck.

Get yourself a toyodiy account. It's very handy for tracking down part numbers and comparing part numbers across models. I couldn't find matching models for your car.

complete new lock set for your car is 69005-14621-13 . (looking at around $300-$350)

If Toyota Australia can't get the set for you, try Amayama.com.

Plenty of import 1JZGTE engines still around. Might be an easy fix to buy one to drop in while to properly rebuild your old engine.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I will start tracking down locks for a 90's camry and if that fails toyodiy and Amayama.com will be the answer.

I can do most of the work myself as long as it doesn't need specialised equipment. It was my first car, I've had it nearly a decade it has far more sentimental value than actual $ value. If i sold it now it would just be a rolling chassis, there is almost no point.

I'll do a compression test on the weekend and then I guess I'll know if its time to start hunting for another 1jz.

You should be able to get a rebuild kit for the turbo (not sure about it in Aus, but in the US they are always talking about them) and do it in your shed. However once rebuilt it needs (or at least it's highly recommended) to be balanced professionally since they spin at insanely high RPM.

And if you assume it'll need a new engine then you may be pleasantly surprised that the current one lasts a while/for ever. But best to plan for the worst.
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
