Starter motor solenoid.
I finally got off my butt and got all the bits to do a H1/H4 upgrade to my ra23.
The new wiring harness is obviously much thicker than the factory one and I know that I should be using the relays to pull power directly from the battery rather than the factory wires. Purpose being 1. to not overload old inadequate wiring and 2. Avoid significant voltage drop through the length of wire.
Something I hadn't considered is that with the battery mounted in the boot, wiring to the battery would seem to be counterproductive. Is there somewhere else to pick up power from? I had thought alternator but I've read in some places that I'll end up with a voltage drop and lose some of the benefit of brighter lights.
Advice much appreciated.
Starter motor solenoid.
Thanks heaps B.
and ground wire from the lights is just as important as the power wire
the fat wire to starter motor/solenoid is permanent power..
could also take power from the alternator output.
for grounding, could ground straight to alternator body.

Thanks guys.
Lights went in today. Needed a sparky to make some changes to the wiring loom. Seems like the pinout was not quite right for neg switching anyhow. Miracle of miracles was that I made an online enquiry, expecting to book in tomorrow or later in the week. Next thing you know, guy calls me and says he's out doing a roadside breakdown and might as well come over if I'm free.
Cost me very little for a home call and an hour of work, on a Sunday no less.
I did all the physical install etc myself and I know the wiring is not going to burst into flame because I did it wrong.
Just went for a night time spin and it's just entirely different. Stoked.
Good to hear. I did the same upgrade on an RT104 I used to own and difference is amazing. I'll be doing the same on my RA28 when I get to that part of the build using BMW headlights
