Default WTB: AE1xx drive shafts (maybe?)

    Please HELP!

I've recently had a conversion done and when I got the car back have noticed that the CV joints are shagged.

    The run down:

    Body is a 1998 AE-101 ADM Corolla
    Engine is a Blacktop 20 valve 4AGE
and the clincher...the engine/gearbox etc was from an AE-9x corolla which had the blacktop 20 valve 4AGE in it...

So, I am wanting to replace the driveshafts but I can't seem to find the correct driveshaft. I'm not a massive hands on guy, so my mechanic has told me that the long shaft has a bearing along the shaft (I'm assuming this bolts to the block somewhere along the way) and all the ones I seem to keep finding on eBay and going in to Repco are the ADM ones that only have a rubber (balancer) on the long shaft.

SO I guess what I'm after is identifying what part will fit/work and where to buy them from...anyone?

    Cheers

Your mechanic is right, the 20Vs came with equal-length driveshafts, which means that the driver's side has an extension-shaft which rests in a carrier bearing bolted to the block, whereas ADM ones are unequal-length so the driver's side is heaps longer and needs a rubber damper on it to reduce vibration.

If you're struggling to find equal-length driveshafts then there shouldn't be a problem running the unequal ones to get you out of a bind as long as you remove the carrier bearing, you'll just suffer from a little bit more torque steer.

Thanks for replying Hiro, some good info there.

I guess what I'm really needing the help with is...where do I get the driveshafts from? So I don't have to do this job again (any time soon anyway) it makes sense to get the right ones now. If I had a part number I'm sure that would help but I don't know where to get started with that...

Toyota part numbers for the blacktop 20V driveshafts in an AE10x chassis (AE101 BZ Touring Wagon came like this from factory) are as follows:

    RH (driver side): 43410-12370
    LH (passenger side): 43420-12330

Hopefully that might be enough to get you a cross-reference, getting them through Toyota will be something like $1k PER SIDE.

A lot of genuine Toyota parts are horribly overpriced, nothing wrong with going aftermarket in this case as long as you can find a cross-reference. Even Aus ones would be expensive through a dealership.

Actually maybe I'll just change out the CV joints as that is the actual problem. Bit of a tougher job, but less cost in parts by the looks of things!
