Default LS1 into my 98 Hilux

Well after too many trips along the freeway in my gutlux doing 70 up the hills with Hyundai Getz tooting as they drive past, I have decided to give the old girl a heart transplant.
And what better heart than an LS1!

Bought the motor, tranny, loom, computer and all the other items for a great price from a guy. As it turns out he just gave me the whole car to take home and strip out as I saw fit, and strip I did haha.

Currently engine is all disconnected, mechanically and electrically, the dash is out and all wiring now disappeared, even pulled the leather seats out to do a swap - bonus!

    Next on the todo list:
Work out how to add pics
    Remove engine
    Wiring harness
    Bypass Vats somehow
Decide on tx case to be used, if not mine
Organise adapter between tranny and tx case.

Yes he is a little one of those sometimes

With a bit of jumping on it and a fair bit of swearing I will get it in there somehow

Got the commo leather seats in and wired up... yay!

Much higher than original seats, puts me in a better perve position

The belts and seats all went in relatively easily with a few minor mods and some aligning brackets folded up.

I was looking how to disable VATS last week. Apparently if you start the car up and unplug the BCM while it is running it relearns to run without VATS. So if you havent already pulled it all out of the commo do that first. Otherwise find someone with a commodore, put your ECU in and do the re-learn trick.

Ahhh poo. Thanks but the engine is out.
I am unsure what to do there, a google/youtube search yields an easy fix. Find the 2 wires and put a resistor matching the resistance of the key between and voila... vats removed!

In reality I have found that there is a single wire going to the bcm. I believe that you can connect 12v to this wire with the resistor in between and it will work, but you still need the BCM. I am not sure of the output signal wire that tells the engine that vats is good.

So that brings me to removing the VATS and dumping the bcm. That costs about $100 and makes life a bit easier.

BUT, I notice that the cruise stalk runs into the bcm so I need to retain the bloody thing if want to have cruise. That or install aftermarket kit of around $400.

My concern and I have no evidence that this will happen, is that the engine has a mild cam and a tune so don't want to screw that up in any way.
Really unsure which way I will go just yet.

Please let me know how you go with the relearn trick. I am going to do this swap with an old Rangie I have so will be useful next time round.

Will ponder it over a few more bourbons and let you know what I end up doing, maybe a lot of bourbons lol

I was just looking for a future project/plan, nothing anytime soon!
From memory the commo cruise did run through BCM, actually i think all of the dash gear did too. Its been a fair few years since playing around with fixing the shitters.
Good luck with whichever way you go.

I hope you budgeted funeral insurance for your family when you built those seat mounts. They sure as shit will not hold up in an accident mate

No funeral insurance but I do appreciate your thoughts. Those where just used as a template to fab up the proper mounts. New mounts are made from heavier gauge metal than 3mm flat bar. Also strengthened with gussets etc and nicely painted. They just didn't show up well in the photos, was all just black.

Working on the harness at the moment. Struggling to find the correct pinouts for the PCM to give it a little haircut. All the sites are for US engines and although some are similar there are none that I have found that match.
If anyone is able to help out I would be most appreciative.

2004 LS1 with DBW that has blue and green connectors.

The additional in car items are now sorted, A/C, cruise, DBW, OBD etc. Will keep the BCM set aside incase need at later date when converting dash cluster

I had a 4runner with a 3.8 it was great but it took me sometime to nut out the cooling on it, I ended up sourcing a engine fan from the states that i bolted to the water pump via a custom made adapter. I did other mods too like a lockers, twin throttles, rockers etc. She use to strap for a 4wd.

Love your project mate. I have always wanted one with a v8.

Started the operation to replace the 2.7 with the mamouth 5.7 today.
Not sure if I've bitten off more than I can chew, bit late now as I'm past the point of no return lol.

While disconnecting the engine I came across this...
Anyone know what it might be?

After getting the old one out...

The transfer case was whipped off and bolted to the box with an adaptor.

Tomorrow will be a bit of head scratching I think haha

Nothing you need with the LS1!
It is an idle mixture adjustment variable resistor apparently.
