Default W58 remote shifter on to W57

    Hi All,

I did a search and couldn't find any info on this.

Can a W58 remote shifter set up be bolted to a W57? I have a fellow Toymods member willing to swap a remote set up for my current one, and i just want to ensure it's doable before we both go pulling our gearboxes apart.

    Thanks,
    Dave.

Yes and no. It will swap over but you are stuck with the issue that the w57 rear housing does not have the attachement points for the two side arms that brace the shifter so it wont really work. The non remote housing will swap onto remote housing gearbox no issues. See below pic (these may not both be w5x boxes but you get the idea)

You will have to drill and tap the selector rod as well, as they are in different positions. (Not hard, but it won't just swap over).

Unless you swap selector rod also?

The selector rod in the two boxes I had were different lengths and also had different profile machined into the end that goes into the forks.

I swapped a non remote shifter housing onto a remote shifter w58 from a supra and only had to swap over the housing and the below thing whatever it is called. I didn't go the other way so can't really say on whether you need to swap the selector rod also when using the remote shifter housing.

I've gone from W58 remote shifter to W58 non remote using W57 bits.

I had to change the shift arm and also drill and tap the selector rod to put it in the right spot. (Obviously different versions of each box around)

Swapping bits in either direction would require the same/similar work I would think. (In terms of internal bits)

I haven't used the box yet as I just put it back together without sealing it up with gasket goo so I didn't try to use the shifter. Looks like I'll have to open it back up and mod the shaft. Thanks for the info

Where are people goin to get the different shifter positions?
Is it just luck of the draw when buying a box or can i source the genuine?

Just to add to this as I've recently done the swap, if putting a non remote extension housing onto a jza80 w58 you need a non remote output shaft bearing on the jza80 output shaft. if not the bearing wont be seated on the cup in the extension housing. and your output shaft won't be properly supported. this can lead to failure of the center bearing but more likely poor engagement of the gears leading to loss of teeth.
