Question What roof insulation material is this?

Can anyone tell me what sort of roof insulation material this is?

It was pulled from my 1993 Toyota Coaster BB40 (you can see the roof remainders)

It was very dusty, and seemed to somehow break through my plastic gloves rather easily.

Seems to have some "cloth" material woven into it. Color is mostly gray (or darker going to dark yellowy/blackish for worn bits)

Also, what would you suggest replacing it with?

Its just standard carpet underlay man, made from recycled material from anywhere and everywhere. Replace it with dyna mat or just go to clark rubber and get the same stuff.

    Great - thanks! (Phewy)

So what would be best in terms of insulation (i.e. keeping heat out)?

Are you converting this into a camper? It seems you have a full interior fit out in mind, can you perhaps design the roof to use some form of home roof insulation?
These are just my rambling thoughts however......

If using home/domestic insulation, don't squash it into tight/small spaces. It relies on air pockets to provide the insulation value so crushign the shit out of it makes it pointless.

Consider having two skins (inner & outer) and then insulate between them to suit. Or make up panels to fit across roof re-enforcements and attach with high-strength sikaflex and/or rivets (e.g. thin masonite/ply covered with vinyl/cloth on one side and underlay or foam plus a sarking cover on the other side), cover joins between panels with flexible rubber strips.

Also, an exterior or 2nd skin over the roof will give you impressive heat and rain-noise rejection. Old Landrovers used to have a second roof (aka Safari Roof) which worked surprisingly well (example pic)

query: is dynamat ideal for roofs.
