Default Toyota Crown RS56 Ute project or Z UTE the build so far

Hi guys, I bought the old 1970 Toyota Crown RS56 Ute from an elderly guy up in Moss Vale. Was told that Moss Vale City Council owned it when new, and the ute was the city engineers government supplied runaround. When the Council sold it off the engineer bought it as his private car.
The ute changed hands a couple of times but always stayed in the Moss Vale area.

Was a running RS56 when I bought it, drove it onto the trailer for the trip home to Canberra. The old 5R engine was very smokey and a little tired. The decision was made at an early stage to fit the old girl with a "Z" engine, either 1U"Z"FE, or a 1/2J "Z" engine hence the name.

    The ute as collected,

Just a touch of rust converter applied,

Coinsidering its 40 years of age, the body was in quite good shape with only surface rust and a few dings,

    A bit of colour

    The spray on bed liner

The trial fit of the 1UZ-FE

    1UZ is a bit tight

That was the side that had plenty of clearance, one of the exhaust ports on the LH side was dead in line with the upper control arm, with less than 30mm of clearance. With the sump centred in the chassis we had about 12mm clearance all round the sump, absolutely no way to move the engine forward or back. Even raising the engine to a point where the intake manifold just cleared the bonnet, there was still no clearance for a decent exhaust sytem off the LH bank. Anything that could have been fabricated would have strangled the flow big time. So much for the V8 I so wanted.

The decision was then taken to utilize a 2JZ-GE VVTi engine.

Fitted a diff from an MS112 Crown and Front brakes from the same car,

    more pics next page,

    cheers Chuck.

    More words and pics

This is the invisible package that E-go managed to lose for a few weeks in Brisvegas, all good now that I have it in my possession.

Alloy surge tank mounted under the rear LH side of the ute tub.

Needed a speedo, thought I would include the tacho and keep the lovely old analogue clock.

The Chrome edging on this instrument cluster was all worn away, options were paint it, or use a panel that has been butchered to fit an 8 track !

Speedhut guage Speedo with tacho fitted nicely into the old speedo housing, the old odometer reset knob has been replaced with a red engine check light.

The old 2pac clear on a very worn out parker/indicator lense, and a selection of LED lights I will be using. The total cost to replace all incandescent globes with LED's is under $20.00, good old fleabay, and the asian suppliers.

2Pac cleared tail light being installed.
    Left hand engine mount

    Right hand engine mount.

Minimum required clearance MS112 steering box to headers.

Many thanks must go to Stitty and Stitty's dad for parts and knowledge, Also to TheToyman1975 and JZK for the info and pics of their 2JZ installations.

Big thanks to my lads mate Dave for wireing up the 2JZ-GE VVTi.

    Thanks for looking guys,

    cheers Chuck.

    New instalment just for Rod!

A little bit of air assist for the ass end when carrying a heavy load.

Simple airvalve controller for left to right balance.

Had to have a tank to be able to adjust the load carrying capacity in non urban areas.
    cheers Chuck.

I have attempted an electric window conversion for the old girl. Utilized MS112 electric motors and quadrants attached to the original RS56 regulator mechanism. Took a fair bit of stuffing around to get the angles cporrect, but we got there. All dummied up in a spare door with old glass run channel felt, the window goes up and down nicely.

However the doors on the car have aftermarket glass run felt which is quite tight on the glass. I would expect major motor burnout within a couple of cycles of opening and closing the window Bummer. Seems these old Toyota's have rather thick glass for the windows, will have to find some reasonable condition second hand glass run or shelve the luxo lecky windows.

    cheers Chuck.

Shouldn't that be "you don't need to subscribe seeing how often you see this beast"?

Great to see the steps involved Chuck, will be even better to see it out and about soon, bit of a rarity in these parts hey!

    Keep up the good work.
