I did not think that vvti 1jz had etcs-i... I thought it was etcs (no -i). the -i means that it is effectively a fly by wire system. I thought that the vvti 1jz had a second throttle for traction control etc in front of the normal one... Maybe the later ones went to etcs-i . With the etcs-i systems there is a separate power feed for the throttle system, so it might be worth checking that it is wired up
Anyway, if you don't have the afm then that will be a major problem! To describe it simply, the engine ecu effectively injects a known ammount of fuel to try and get a desired air fuel ratio... It uses the afm to work out how much air is going into the engine so that it can put in the right amount of fuel, without the afm it will run poorly as it has close to no idea what is going on!
