    Default 4AF extractors/headers

Well.... the head is just about finished, a good cleaning and re-assembly is in its future. While the block is @ the machinist, I figured I'd look @ ways of keeping the flow up........

    Here is a stock extractor

as you can plainly see, it is designed for just one purpose - to collect all the gasses and get them into a single pipe as quickly as possible... or so it seems. The direction of the #1 log is actually good... the only good thing about this manifold. The bad... 1 and 2 flow together, and then flow into 3, and 4, and then on its way.

I've looked around @ extractors/headers and I've found a few so far (I'm pretty sure there are others... post up if you know any...) Of those I've found so far, 2 are by Pacesetter, and 1 by Wildcat(Aussie firm) 1 by JVTR and 1 by Hurricane Power(??)

The Pacesetters are broken out into early 4AFE and later 4AFE...

The early Pacesetter is 4-1, and uses 35mm(1 3/8") primaries and the collector is 51mm (2")

I do not have a good photo of the later type BUT they use a 4/2/1 type with 1 5/8" primaries and a 2 1/4" collector - the ball joint would be removed in favor of a proper flex joint

The Wilcat headers are the ones sold on ebay.au

their details are they use 1 1/2" primaries, 1 3/4" secondaries and 2" collector

The JVTR extractor... are not currently available

Hurricane Power 4/2/1 type no specs, no pics

So... with my goal to maximize the low end as best as possible what is best for my goals???

Hi OST, I couldn't find original article I was looking for but these might help.

Have you considered doing any of the complete exhaust work yourself or just finding a reputable exhaust builder manufacturer?

Well, that shiney extractor finally got here....

    Looks good doesn't it..........

cough, choke, cough a 2nd time.......

Besides the piss poor assembly(note only the pipe on far left is even close to being aligned), look @ the inner diameter! At 35mm, that is perfect for a 4AGE(30-31mm exhaust ports), but this 4AF has 25mm exhaust ports(Not sure about newer types), a dump from 25mm to 35mm is horrible. It'll really slow the velocity down by expanding that much right out of the port. FWIW...The exhaust gasket is also 25mm

As of now... although "better" than stock.... I'm not sure HOW MUCH better????

I am thinking if it is possible to make a stepped header.... by using 35mm OD pipe and slipping it inside the primaries and then have the new narrower stepped sections welded into place??? Anyone???

I am also attempting to actually acquire the 97+ 4AFE header and downpipe! I've got a gentleman in Ireland who will sell me one for 25 euros (about $35).

We are now looking into the cost to ship it here! 9 kilos (about 20 lbs.) shipped from Ireland to the west coast of the USA........

well, I asked my friend in Ireland, who has the OEM header to get me a measurement of the primaries....

    29-30mm

that is PERFECT....... now it looks like I'll have to open my wallet and pry a few bills loose, or if you prefer a different comparison, bend over and smile
