    Default 4AGE into TA22

    G'day

Little history on how this came to be.
I brought my Celica about 3 months ago to become my new little fun car. I knew to check to see how bad the rust was, how much it leaked general things with most older cars. But I'd never owned a carbie car before and generally didn't know what to look for as fair as they went.

Any hoo there was this rattle in the 2T-G I couldn't place and feeling like I owed it to the little car I started fixing it up in my spare time. New radiator, battery, just bits here and there. But still couldn't find the rattle. I got the carbies checked out as it was running rough/rich. We threw it on his exhaust gas analyser to see how bad it needed a tune up. Long story short. Got sick of it laying around in a poor state. Ripped the head off. Last two cylinders were incorrectly shimed. Bit of damage all round. 4AGE demeed only solution. Got me a JDM sprinter and have started planning prepping everything. I have a few questions which I'm hoping some of the people who have done this before can help me with.

    1) From what I've read most people use the AE86 engine mounts and modify them. Does anyone have any pictures??

    2) Tail shaft. I understand it has to be shorteded but will the Ta22 tail shaft mount up to the Sprinter T50. If not what is easier, trying get it to fit or trying to use the celica T50?

Any other problems which others have come across please let me know?

    Thanks Justin

Hey mate, im just finishing my 4age into ta23 conversion doing everything by myself.

    1. i bought custom engine mounts that bolt to the standard crossmember and 4age.
they are fairly easy to make by yourself with a little know how, theres a forum with full details how to make them here some where.

2.The sprinter t50 is 22 splines eg the number of teeth on the output shaft of the gearbox,
    the ta22 should be a 20 spline i think.
I had a new custom shaft made up for mine for about $300 i think from a guy in newcastle. cheapest i found gave him the old shaft to work off and the new length i needed. easy.

you might have to look at upgrading your brakes for engineering.

    you will need from memory:
    new rad, hoses to suit.
modify wiring to suit original harness, ecu.
    legal air induction.
modify or new exhaust as you will need a cat to meet emissions.
    modify or new tailshaft.
    modify or make engine mounts
i think you can move your gearbox crossmember on the ta22 to suit the ta22, cut hole for shifter mabye.
mount coil, relay, misc items for 4age.

it takes time and a little bit of stuffing around. tha ta22 have a smaller engine bay so it will be a tight fit.

    cheers

Thanks for the great information. Forgot that it will need a cat.

Its the mounts and the wiring that will give me the biggest headache I think.

Does anyone know if '86 brakes or for that matter struts fit at all... ?

Alright the conversions going well. Got the motor in, making up the templates for the new engine mounts.

Unfortunately I'm missing the yoke from the gearbox that came with my '86.

Given that its Xmas no where is open, but as I was looking threw the classifieds I found this...
    http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=59129

Is there any chance that the JDM'86 front half of the tail shaft joining up to my Celica one??

Just trying to do some lateral thinking??

I have a spare crossmember to suit a 4age with a t50 and rack and pinion conversion all in one go. It will not suit a Supra box should you later decide to upgrade.

Mods- if this is a breach of the rules please delete this comment.

You can't run the same tailshaft as now. That is unless you do the tricky job of swapping the front halves of the gearboxes. Otherwise you will need to run a AE T50, this has a different amount of splines on the output.

I've currently got the AE86 T50 22 spline box in and bolted up and engine mounts coming along nicely.

Just seeing if I can mix and match tail shafts? Or if I have to chase down a JDM T50 Yoke or go for a full custom tail shaft.
Either is fine just seeing what my options are??

Just thought I would give a bit of an update.

Fitted AE86 gearbox up to standard mounts and found a 22 spline yoke to fit. No cutting of tail shaft needed
Cut hole to fit new shifter position.
    Clutch line fitted up.
    Speedo connected

Final mounts made and welded in. Engine sits in great and can still use my strunt bar.
The 86' radiator was in much better condition than my orginal one so made up some supports and shrouding for it. Found that an 1996excel top radiator hose, and a 2001 model magna lower hose fit perfectly

Am looking at running a surge tank just becuase of the small size of the standard tank, has anyone got any good pictures of one of there set ups?? Or any tips....

Getting a set of extractors made to fit this week then starting the wiring.

Where have any of you fit your ecu? I was thinking of behind the glovebox to stop it from being damaged.

It still bolts up and all, but we mounted the engine as low as possible. Its hard to explain without a picture but where the standard manifold ends would mean a very sahrp turn in the exhaust would be required.

Not the most ideal set up so figured that coming this fair might as well not skimp out now and start being dodgey

With using a newer engine will I have to run a catalytic converter now?

Depends. Was the engine built after '86?
