Hey All,
Just come back from the tuners and have a bit of homework to do.
Here is infomation about the car do your able to play along at home (and hopefuly help me with some answers.)
Car: AE86 Trueno
Year: 1986
Engine: 4age
Mods: Quad throttle bodys, coil pac and map convertion. We also believe cams but not comfirmed. Has fuel trim adjustment in dash (3 stages), havent figure out how or where they get their sig from, there is also electronic spark ignition (ESI) adjustment in the same unit. (there is many more but i believe these are the main one that matteras far as tuning go.)
ECU: Has TRD 89661-SP051 stamped on the board, chip has a sticker saying 'AE92-05' on it.
Also has an Apexi AFC neo (just had a play and now car idles at 500rpm...this is y i shouldnt touch things) the AFC neo was set to being a 6cyl not a 4 and isnt picking up a throttle position sig at all.
Fuel econ is around 310km per tank (fairly low as far as i know, this is what made me look at getting a tune cos its costing me a bit)
Now what is this ECU board out of, ive googled it and found a list of ECU part numbers with their corisponding model next to em, but this ECU Part number hasnt got anything next to it, is it because its TRD? the case also had the website toyota-ttc.co.jp on it (mean anything to you)
Any reason its been tuned as a 6 cyl?
Any one know about the fuel trims unit and ESI, its got TRD logo on it but the old owner was sticker happy and everything is TRD acording to him.
If you have any infomation on any of these components relivant to tuning please let me know as both the tuner and i are trying to get info so we know what we are dealing with...now im off to try and get my car to idle...without a TP sig...

Also just found that it was attached to N1 series cars...whats this mean?
Means it's an ecu for a TRD N1(racing series in japan) motor. Serious business engine. Chances are your car will run like arse unless you have an engine built to N1 spec (which I highly doubt).
tbh I'm surprised it runs at all if it's using an N1 ecu?
Ive got the car out of japan about 3 months ago, no idea what the internals are (cams sound massive) here are a few pics of the bay,
Its was using a fiar bit of fuel so i just wanted to get it tuned...thinking of goin for a wolf 3d just for ease of tuning later on rather than usinf the apexi afc neo thing.
the TRD N1 4A is a spastic motor. hit it up on youtube and you will see what i mean. either way, an apexi afc wont do much on something like that. you need a full aftermarket ecu.
take it to someone like Neil Bates who's worked with TRD gear in the past?
looking at replacing everything and running a wolf v4x, its my everyday driver so i just want to simplify it a bit, get rid of the apexi afc neo and the in dash fuel and spark timing trims. any suggestions what to run with the sort of mods i have?
microtechs are easy, but not as feature packed as some.
adaptronics are also not too shabby and have a few features that are good, price is good on them too!
motecs are good too, but it all depends on how much you want to spend I guess?
They will all do relatively the same things, talk to your local tuner and see what he prefers, might be a good starting point!

you'll need to work out what cams, compression and injectors you have before starting tuning - if it's vaguely close to a genuine N1 engine, it really wont suit regular road use.
You could probably sell the TRD ECU to a rally nerd with a 4AGE in need of more fasts.
TRD Multi-ECU with selectable pre-programming for AE86, AE82, AE92, EP71 turbo.
Fuel 1 General Correction @ all rpm's +/- 15% in 5% steps
Fuel 2 Correction proportional to rpm +/- 21% @ 8400 rpm
Fuel 3 Correction proportional to MAP +/- 18% @ 760 mmHg
ESA Ignition Timing Correction @ all rpm's +/- 6 crank deg in 2 deg steps
Designed for use with AE86, AE82 and AE92 TRD Group A modifications, and with
AE86, EP71 tubo TRD N1 spec modifications, but will work somewhat with similar
non-TRD modifications. Adjustable on the fly with the remote controller

if you want a reliable, fuel economical vehicle, you've got the wrong engine. spastic big cams will never give you good fuel economy - sell your pretty engine, buy stock 4a, profit
GOLD! This is the info we needed! Anyone know where to get more info on this ecu?
So the fuel trims thing in the dash is paired with the ecu and isnt just an add on?
What sort of engine mods am i looking for to tell if its group A?
If it is group A spec what would a set up like this be worth?
if it's built to TRD N1 spec i think you should be able to realise it's something a bit beyond your run of the mill mods....
