I think you will find that the female spade connectors will just vibrate off over time.

New plugs are available froim Toyota for less than you think.

IMO, the coils are expensive, the plugs are not.

The wreckers charge $200 for 4 coils with plugs, $150 for 4 coils without plugs.

$40 for 4 coil plugs (with wires) new from Toyota is better IMO.

Thumbs up Re: 1UZ Coil-on-plug conversion

The coils to use are the 3UZ ones.
Just cut the mount off, then use the plastic cover to hold them down, works a treat.
Dont forget, leave your plug gap at 1.1mm, this gap easily supports 400RwHp @ 15psi.

    Time to update this thread

The car has been running CoP for a few months now including a few events, no problems at all. It dyno'ed 235rwhp/175rwkw which is very good for a still-stock engine, whether any of that result is due to the CoP its impossible to tell

Due to slackness i never completed the mounting brackets for the front two CoPs that need them and they work fine just sitting in the tubes, in fact with the engine running you can pull the CoP out by more than a centimeter before it starts misfiring!

Also i got a set of 8 new plugs for the CoPs from Amayama for around $50, hoping that i could make the existing brass pins i used fit in them but that didnt work, and to buy the proper pins separately was going to cost over $130... just for tiny brass pins! So i shitcanned that idea and again i have not had any issues sticking with the brass phone connectors with the wires soldered in

I would have to say though that as physically locking the CoPs to teh cam cover doesnt seem to be as critical as i thought, if i were to do this again i would just use the 3UZ ones as Neil has.

3UZ CoP's are the ones to I use

    I still run a plug gap of 1.1 @ 15psi.
Stock engine is currently running 10's on 1/4.

Aiming for high 9's as soon as I get my Tech Inspection finished

    woops, fixed

Excellent work Neil! CoP on the 1UZ is not a necessity by any means but i would recommend it if anyone intends to run aftermarket ECU, if for nothing else than it allows you to get rid of a heap of the factory ignition crap on the engine and makes it look much neater and easier to work on

All we need now is someone to make nice chromed / alloy covers for the cam belts and it will finish of the install

this is the first time I have seen an overhead cam V8 with exposed toothed pulleys, I like it

I thought about making an adapter for this job but figured a lack of demand

Well normally you have the dizzys and rotors in the centre of the cam pulleys so for 90% of UZs its not going to work unless you change the ignition as per above. I still want to remove the backing plates behind the cam pulleys which will further tidy up the engine (and i think make it look pretty good) but that involves removing the pulleys themselves (effort)

yes this is know as I have seen the things mounted there and thought it was stupid and damn ugly. I have no idea why they didn't just run 4 waste spark coils or something.

Should you remove the brackets please post an updated pic

Because CoP was not available / viable way back in 1989 when this engine was first produced.

I thin Nissan would beg to differ on that with the R32.
