Default V Series Starter Motor Alternatives - Dimensions needed

Ok, factory starter motor on the 4V is trying to make love to my steering rack. Before I get carried away and try to relocate it I would like to see if there are any alternatives that may bolt in and be a smaller size with a better solenoid location. The engine is using what I suspect is an M series flywheel and what appears to be a standard V series starter of massive proportions. Bolt spacing is approx 105mm, height into bellhousing (mounting face to top of gear) is 42mm and gear kicks in approx 10mm to engage the flywheel. 9 teeth on starter gear I think. Starter mounts on right hand (drivers) side of motor with the solenoid hanging below it.
So what starters do you have in your shed to check for me? I'm thinking potentially 1/2JZ or a 7M starter may be the go, solenoid placement is the main benefit I am looking for as if it pointed up rather than down clearance isssues would be much reduced. I will try to get a pic of my starter up later. Here is a pic of the block for now.

I had a similar problem. I don't have a solution for fitting the starter on the RHS of the engine. Although I did try a T, M and (i think) R series starters (including the smallish geared type) which were a no-go. So you can probably strike these off the list.

I opted to relocate the starter to the LHS.

Did you modify the block or reverse mount through the bellhousing? I'm more inclined to go through the bellhousing if I can. Got any pics of what you did for yours? Have been looking at some reduction gear diesel starters but quite hard to get hold of to trial.

I modified the block and made an adapter plate. I'll take a pic for you.

If you reverse mount, won't you need to re-wind the motor to spin the opposite way?

Pics would be really good. Was looking at getting a starter motor from a FWD that mounts in from the gearbox, just a matter of matching or swapping the drive gear and maybe flipping the ring gear on the flywheel. Although I'm sure I've seen ones that pull the starter in to engage rather than throw it out like the current starter so ring gear would still be ok.

Here's my LHS starter mount (using 5V starter, but 4V starter fits also). Note: coolant drain/tap had to be removed and replaced with a plug.

Thanks for the pics, will be very helpful if I go that way. Just out of interest what flywheel did you use?

7M flywheel (drilled to accept the larger V-series crank bolts).
