Default How to swap in QUAD Semi-Sealed H4 Headlights (old celica etc)

I've just recently converted all the headlights on my RA28 to 5.75" Semi-Sealed H4 High-Low lamps.... so that i now have 4 low beams and 4 high beams (as opposed to the normal 2 x low beams).

This is applicable to probably just about any old school car that uses sealed 5.75" beams.

    First things... collect your parts!!
I bought some dodgy semi-sealed beams from Autobarn for $20ea... i would NOT recommend them as they are made like shit from a retarded baboon. I do recommend Hella or Narva beams, but at around $80ea it gets a little costly (and im a tightarse).
I also used Autotechnica optic-blue 55/60W H4 globes, which at $25.00 a pair are good value, and ADR approved!!!

Now pull your car apart - It's FUN!!!

The other thing you are going to need is a SECOND set of the mounting "cups" that the beams sit in - the hi-low beams have a different cup to a straight hi-beam. I have lots of spares!

You take the mounting cup for the outside RH lamp and use it as the new cup for the inside LH lamp..... like so:

Mount your semi-sealed beams, and put in your globes..... and this is where you find out why the Autobarn ones only cost $20 fucking dollars:

Now put your car back together....

You'll need to do some wiring next..... get yourself 4 wireable H4 socket connectors, 2 x 30A horn relays, and a bunch of cables and spade crimp connectors.
In factory setup, 12V is applied to the LH pin (looking at the pins on the back of the globe) when you turn headlights on, and the earth is switched between the top and RH pins to select low and high beams respectively.

I changed this..... the LH pin is now earth, and power is delivered by a relay for each of the low beam and high beam pins.
The relays are triggered by the factory H4 socket - 12V+ for both relay coils comes from the power feed to the factory socket, and the switching earths determine if high or low beam are turned on.

Make sure there are fuses, phat wires, and other good wiring practices used......

.... and now we are DONE!!!!

    Hi,

Nice work pretty boy. Now you can blind people and animals at night.

I hope you have adjusted the beams properly?

I improved the headlights on my ra23 by using 150w sealed beam inner globes to replace the original 60w units.. Some generous sized cable and a new relay was used and the light those babies puts out is fantastic
My next job is to replace my outers with a semi-sealed globe so i can get some decent low beam light too..
Oh and the best bit was that the 150w globes only cost $17 each from super-crap

    Mr River,

Yes i have adjusted my beams correctly.... well as best as possible. The pathetic quality of those hi-low lamps places the globes at various and ridiculous angles that are far from flat and far from uniform. So i've got them adjusted as best as possible not to blind anyone.
.... and it's still better than 99.999999% of 4WD's out there!!!

The amount of light laid down on the road is AWESOME too!! 225W of low beam light is a shitload better than 75Watts.

I'm not quite "Mr Try" when it comes to headlights (4 x 100/150W H4's)..... these globes are ADR approved. I just wanted to be able to see the road when there is any other light other than that from the pissy standard headlights....

Thanks this will be handy... I've just come up from the shed from sandblasting all the light mounting bits, will make sure I have four sets of the cups you mention.

The Hella and Narva ones are expensive, but isn't that because they come with bulbs too? Wonder if you can buy them seperately...

    *EDIT*

    Just answered my own question.

Not sure about hella, couldn't find anything on their site. Narva do sell the conversion kits just by themselves without globes, part number 72046. A quick search in google found one australian online store selling them for $39 a pair. I've never seen these kits stocked at autobarn, only the ones that come with globes, so I'd imagine they'd need to get them in.

Additional headlights are allowed in WA, they must be ADR compliant, mounted symetrically on the car, and if they are high beam units, they must automatically switch off when low beam is selected.

Witzl has met all these requirements in spades, and when you think about it, all he has really done is add low beam to the inside pair of lamps.

i would challenge the RTA to show me how my headlights are any LESS compliant than just about any 4WD fresh out of a dealership.....

    Hi,

    I hate those tanks also.

While it's good to see that WA allows 4 low-beam lights, I'm not sure that NSW does.

I don't think you're gonna be able to challenge and win against the RTA. These are the same dudes who would rule my plastic spring-loaded fender mirrors as unsafe, yet allow tanks with massive bullbars on our roads.

I hope your lights aren't illegal 'cos it looks good, and can only be safer for you when driving at night. And, if they're aligned correctly they shouldn't blind anyone coming towards you - unlike the tanks.
