Justing bringing this one back up guys....

Please note that I have updated the wiring diagram of death to better mimic a factory setup.... with the new diagram your low beams globes switch off when the high beam is on. This is how i've wired it on my RA28 now.
NOTE: you will need at least one 5-pin relay, instead of just two 4-pin ones as originally specified.

Also uploaded all the pics to the 18rg.com.au server so they are all visible again

    Any questions, just post em!

Also worth mentioning that its a good idea to use fused relays as if one of your headlights shorts out it will only blow its relay fuse so you dont lose all 4 lights only 1.

your diagrams are still wrong, original low beam earth wire needs to be connected to the new low beam harness to make the light function correctly

Not quite, Toyota headlights are ground switched, so in essence by supplying power down the line to the relay and grounding it directly you are using the lowbeams when you supply power to that line (i.e. when you switch your headlights on).

thats right they are switched ground, and you need to join original ground switch for low to new ground switch for low to make the warning light function correctly

Old Celicas have no such warning light, as such i dare say that is why Witzl isnt using it because it makes no effect on the car in question.

If you are talking about the "HI-BEAM" bluelight on the dash... it works fine

I cant remember if i chucked a diode in there or not to ensure it functions, I can check in a few days when it stops raining. I just redid the diagram above from rough memory of how i recently re-wired the RA28.... which was a rewire of basically EVERYTHING in the engine bay.....

    takai and ta-022

im not talking about a lights on indicator, im talking about the high beam indicator, it acually works through the low beam filament of the headlight globe.

Hey guys, is it necessary to upgrade the actual headlights? Or is the main purpose of this so that you have 4 lows and 4 highs as opposed to 2 highs, 2 lows? Is it possible just to change the bulbs (and wiring etc) and if so what type would i need? (I want to upgrade both the highs and lows) If its not possible or not as effective then I'll do the full swap but thought this might save me some trouble/money. Cheers!

I believe this upgrade serves 2 purposes, being providing higher current to the lights through reduced voltage drop - making for brighter lights, and also allowing the use of 4 hi and 4 low beams.

Higher rated globes draw more current and therefore require higher rated wiring. With the standard setup, the wiring runs from the lights to the dash and then grounds so theres a fair distance of wiring which results in a pretty substantial voltage drop. By reducing this length of wiring, greater voltage can be delivered to the lights.

Also keep in mind that the current shape of lights - reflectors, glass, etc, is quite superior to that of early 70's designs so even with just better globes the light prodiced can be improved without even touching the wiring. H4's also allow a greater selection of globes in comparison to that of the sealed beam units which come standard.

You could quite easily do this upgrade without moving to the 4hi/4low setup and just run 2 hi/2low if you wanted. You could also have 2 low/4hi, but whatever you choose is really up to you.

yeah that works.... but if you leave your lights on the relays will still be activated and drain your battery over the course of a week or two
