    Default AE82 external voltage regulator

Where the hell is this ugly little sucker!?

I dug around the engine bay and cant even find a 6pin plug, let alone the voltage reg. I know its a external type as its only got the single connector on the alternator (bosch type)

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks

    Nate.

    hang on....

i think my 4ac has an internal regulated bosch alternator.... as it does in fact have the black reg on the back ee 14v3....

Now i suppose for the next question, its still only got the one wire coming from it, and i want to do a 20v conversion.... 1 -> 3 wires.... where do they go ?

An external reg alternator will have more than one wire coming from it dood. (not including +B).

Most likely have an internal reg alternator, the yellow/white is usually the charge lamp wire.

Its most likely uses a simpler regulator which doesn't have the extra inputs.

the problem is though..... that if its using a simpler one... do i just wire the 20v alternator to use the yellow and white wire as the charge lamp(?) and where can i stick the sense and ig wires >.<

ill take a pic of it in a second and stick it up....

Its a bosch, has the black reg on the back and only a single spade terminal which is a d+?

If your going to leave your original alternator in place the wiring can stay the same.

If your going to use the 3-wire alternator you will need to wire it up as it expects, i.e. wire the Ig to an ignition source and sense to the battery as per The Witzl's post. (i.e. you will have to run new wires)

Just realised the witzls diagrams dont work.

but its simple, the Ig terminal just needs 12V when the ignition is on.

The sense terminal just needs to be connected directly to the battery with its own wire. (Don't connect to the +B terminal on the alternator, it needs to have its own wire to the battery terminal).

    Yep!

Need a working charge lamp for the alternator to work though.

Disconnect the charge lamp from the alternator and turn ignition on and ground the charge lamp wire, the light should turn on. If not, you need to check wiring to the lamp and also make sure the light isn't blown. The light should have Ignition +12V to one side with ignition on and the other side goes to the alternator.

that would be easy done... if it had the charge light wire... its just got that yellow and white wire.

i might just connect the charge light wire off my new one straight to ground so it just charges and then it wont know whats amiss?

    THANK YOU! shessh.

thats what i was getting at... there is only that one wire (on top of the main charge wire) on the alternator. so that would mean that the yellow and white is in fact the charge lamp wire and there is no other wires from the alt?
