    Default Hilux 1uz conversion

Doin the hilux - 1uz conversion on my 93 2wd extra cab and am having trouble with the tail shaft atm, my trans from a soarer has the rubber donut coupling and therefore no sliding slip yoke to compensate for axle travel, can i get a splined slip joint from a 4wd and get it put in the rear section of my orig hilux 2wd shaft like as in behind the centre bearing, surely if i get a 4wd shaft and my 2 shafts{soarer & hilux 2wd} a driveline place could build 1 out of 3, what have others done? I know i should have got a crown set-up but i got a whole car {soarer} very cheap and the engine was to good a condition to pass up.

are you running a one piece shaft or are you going to run the centre bearing?
If your still running the centre bearing just get a tailshaft place to put a slip joint on the rear shaft but ive seen them run with the donut and no slip joint without much drama

I plan on using the centre bearing seein as its already there and the whole vibration argument that a one peice shaft so long may/may not induce,i was also told by a driveshaft specialist years ago that the shorter the shaft the smaller the uni's can be and still take decent hp,the hilux uni's arn't exactly huge but i'm hoping they will do the job. Did you say you have seen the conversion done with no slip joint at all? Did they just rely on the rubber flexing?

HI Mick, I have done this on a 98 2wd hilux. I swapped the drive flange with an auto 4 runner flange, which is the same spline. then I used a 4 wd hilux slip joint mated to the back half of the front shaft in my 2 piece tail shaft.the tube diameter is the same and i havn't had any dramas even with a 75 shot of nitrous and slicks.
    Cheers, Alan.

Thanx for replying, its encouraging that someone else has done what i want, i'm a bit lost with your story but,did you mean you took the drive plate off the 4wd meaning the yoke out the back of the box? in that case you must have a crown auto with uni yoke, mine is the rubber donut type. If you got any pics that would be great, thanx again mick.

Hi Mick, mine had the rubber donut as well.If you look inside the back of the 3 bolt drive flange that drives the donut you will see a big nut that holds it on the shaft. if you undo this the drive flange will come off and you can put an auto 4runner one on ,then you have something that will bolt to a hilux tail shaft, or you will need to make an adaptor to go between the 4 bolt hilux tail shaft and the 3 bolt donut drive flange.the 4 runner drive flange was a bit long and needed a few mm machined off the inside so the nut bottoms out on the shoulder of the shaft and not on the flange it self.the biggest problem was finding one as the wreckers did not want to separate one from a good gearbox.I will try to get some photos later. If this makes no sense ring me on 0427234968.
    cheers, Alan.

Alan that is great advice, i had a chance to drop into Driveline Services at archerfield today and got more sense out of them face to face,i think being in work clothes and feildservice vehicle helped, they weren't just talking to some dreamer on the phone and they changed their tune {and price} when i mentioned the 4wd shaft instead of them machining slip splines and then machining my trans adaptor with a total custom shaft in excess of $900. That all changed to bring ya 4wd shaft and 2wd shaft and we will just machine the trans adaptor to accept dive flange and bobs ya uncle still could cost $450,that will be a bit cheaper if i can source a good 4runner trans adaptor like you did, heres hoping with all fingers and toes crossed.
